Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

not sure if this belong in this topic:huh: or not, but there are 2 petshops near my house( not to be confused with the 2 shops near my place of work!!), I visited both today to look for water conditioner as the origional small bottle I was givent had run out with all the water changes recently :(.

I found what I was looking for in the first shop, but then stopped at the second for a look at what food they have( only got pellets last sat when I bought the fish). I found and paid for flakes for tropical fish(which they loved btw :woohoo: ). I then went for a look at their tanks and saw a tank( no bigger than 2FTx1FTx1.5FT) with over 50 Goldfish and atleast 10 small fish of some other species  . I said nothing to the person working as I'm new enuf to this game and wasnt to sure asto what is right and what is wrong ....

but surely this is wrong??!?!?

in a home aquarium yes this would be totally wrong but in a shop environment it would be common practice as fish get sold quite quickly and so while there is a large strain initally on the filter as fish are sold this decreases, also shops (well any worth their salt) do more frequent and larger water changes than the home fishkeeper, also these fish are generally put in with mature filters which are well capable of handling the load.

Also if its a centralised system its the water volume/turnover thats important as its the volume of the whole system, and as sheag said they generally are not in store for long periods!

Normally there is nothing wrong with this, however I know the store Dolf is on about as its down the road from me. Its nothing short of a disgrace. Its got an independent sponge box filter (internal) and there isnt a hope it can cope with the amount of fish. There are about 6 times too many fish in a tank about 60 litres. Its nothing short of a joke. Its a Garden centre I may add. Ive also told Dolf never to buy from this place, the fish are always sick and liveless. Sorry for the angry post,it just annoys me so much when people sell fish but dont know anything about them. One lad in there actually told me go to Supervalue or Lidl when I asked him if they had any shrimp. (In any mans language, thats just stupid).

He probably thought you wanted the frozen kind of shrimp... ;)
