Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi 2pocInterested to hear what you find out Mickey - toying with the idea of setting one up myself.
What fish are you planning on keeping?
there are a large number of fish that do better in brackish environment. I have a few on my wish list but which will fit my requirements and are available!
i may have to rethink what i am keeping as is when the new house is built we will have to have a well and till it is bored i have no idea what the water is like thus any plans for now are just that plans and i want to avoid disappointment thus i have not looked at any fish in particular.

the water won't be to bad as there are three wells locally i have axcess to two need no filteration one is high in iron and need minor filteration i just don't want to plan till the new well is in operation and i have tested it
as for the size of tank i will be starting small two foot for the first six months then i will make the real plans. the only think i know for sure it will be livebears with maybe Periophthalmus barbarus
at the moment only plans and ideas

By the following week the tank is ready for fish.
I dont think there is any difference in the filter bacteria for fresh and brackish water. You just have to let the bacteria adjust to the salt in the water.

Yes i did think that but just wanted to confirm! i think taking the brackish road is my way to go marine. Plus there are so many species that can benefit from a brackish environment.
I have to say i think this is one part of the hobby that is sadly all to often over looked!

I think it is only because people might think the fish are hard to keep or the tanks would have to plain and empty looking when it is the complete opposite.
Fish that live in brackish waters have to be hardy to tolerate the changes in salinity, pH, temperature and hardness.
The list of fish include Monos, Scats, some catfish like the shark cat, loads of Goby's, blennies, endless liverbearers, some killifish, some rainbow fish, glassfish, orange/silver chromide (cichlid), some puffer's, mudskippers, Anableps, Archerfish etc.
Then you have crabs, cockles, mussels, anemones, shrimp and even sponges.
For decor you have the mangroves but there are a number of plants that will adapt to the slightly salty water. Vallis, Microsorium, Anubias, Egeria, some Sagittaria and Hygrophila.
Please note i have taken the list of plants from a book.
Micky i know you are going for more of a mangrove swamp with a dry area for the mudskippers and the foureyes but i just taught i would point out some fish and plants that can be kept.

it is good to see those lists i find that no matter how open minded you start a project you get sucked down one line. this just make you rethink and ensures you get the best from your efforts
cheers for that mate
the other advantage of brackish over marine is the salinty can vary which can make for more interesting experence

I have read that very interesting and well worth reading.
I have also found these that might be of interest
badmanstropicalfish.com/brackish/brackish.html
www.wetwebmedia.com/BrackishSubWebIndex/bracplants.htm
i find myself thinking that brackish tanks are the less explored area of interest which will provide a new experience for some if not all and provide us with some extremely interesting fish to discuss.
