Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Dolf,
Was going to ask how is the new tank going but I see there is a problem?
Have you added any new fish lately that may be bullying this fish? Also are your water readings ok ? How are all the other fish in the tank.
The brown mark on the fish,is it inside the skin if you know what I mean or is it a cut / tumour type look about it ?

Im good thanks Dolf, heard Petstop have some fish in down the road from you,Im heading in there tomorrow evening after work to see whats there, might get me some crs shrimp!
Anyhow back to your fish.
Hmm sounds like the fish may have caught a rock or something and that it literally nipped its skin from it. The brown marking could indeed be a infection of the cut. Id probably try either Melafix (I know alot of people think its useless but for finrot I find it v good early on) or alternatively a good medicine you could add is Esha 2000. I think Esha may be the best option when you arent sure what is wrong with the fish. Remove any carbon you have in your filter before treating.

ran into lfs and got 'Waterlife Myxazin' - will this do?

what do I do with the carbon filter while treating?
will it do any harm if it is just a bad wound from an attack?

Dolf I would have used Melafix but that’s just what im used too
I’m sure they do the same thing.

The carbon filter, if it needs to be changed soon throw it in the bin
If it’s new possibly stick it in a jug of tank water till your ready to use it again (I only use carbon after using med's)

will it do any harm if it is just a bad wound from an attack?

Depends on how bad the wound is.

Dolf,Id go with the Esha 2000 or Melafix at this stage but depends what you have. If its only a nick that the fish has got then it should recover naturally and a little help from you. The brown marking however sounds like its got infected, still not a major issue if its treated early on. Watch out for any changes in the fishes health such as increased breathing, slowness to eat, shying away / sulking in the tank.(All signs that its sick).Secondary infections are a danger now to the fish so that why you need to remedy the situation.
Keep an eye on the other fish also in case they receive any signs of the same symptoms.

Also if you can perhaps feed it something more natural than flake food, improving a fishes diet while its sick can I have found be beneficial. Keep up the weekly water changes also.

No its not :( an artificial plant will not kill a healthy fish.
do a test and then do a waterchange and do a test again.
make sure your doing the best you can for your fish and thats all you can do ;)
