Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Having only recently been introduced to this amazing stuff I thought it might be useful to open a thread to garner opinions and experiences from the forum users.
For those of you that regularly use it you might share your experiences (good and bad). Are there certain things new users should look out for, e.g. how do you know when the foam is full and should be changed ?

hi andrew.
polyfilter is an amazing product, which can greatly help when any type of water quality problem rears its head. unlike carbon it does not leach any removed contaminants back into water, even when saturated. (it can be left in aquarium for as long as u like) it removes all toxins such as lead, copper, alluminium, insecticides and reduces or removes pollution, nitrates, ammonia etc.
it can be cut to any size and added to filter or can be just thrown into tank and will still work a bit more slowly.
the only thing to remember is to remove it if medicating as it will also remove medication.
i have no idea how it works (as organic) but i would not be without it.
polyfilter has no down side apart from the fact its a bit pricy, but is invaluable at any price.

no it dosnt remove any good stuff, as far as i know it is pre saturated with essential trace elements.

I swear by polyfilter and always have a bit in my tanks and a big chuck in my water vat where I pre-heat water. It is especially useful for fry tanks.
However I would not rely on it to replace water changes or anything like that, it just gives a helping hand removing impurities like carbon but with the major advantage thatis does not leach back into the tank.

Is it possible to use this on a planted tank? would it absorb nutrients that the plants need?

If your adding fertilizers or additives they will take them out in a similar way to carbon!!! Only disadvantage!!! But very useful for emergencies!!!

I love the stuff, I buy in bulk for 5-6.50 a pack. I use as quick fix when a test shows up that one of my media is saturated and contaminating the tank
