Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

and then there was whitespot.

I can only see white spot on one other tetra. my other 4 discus seem fine. I had only lost 1 fish in about a year and now this......

The temperature should do the trick.
Never seen a Discus with whitespot.

28.5c should be fine for Discus.
As far as i know 28-31c is the norm for keeping Discus.
I'm sure they could be kept at temperatures as high as 35c as long as there was enough dissolved oxygen in the water, but i wouldent recommend it.

platy252 is correct. contarary to belief, discus will live at lower temps than the recomended 30c.i(its said they will go from @ 25-39c!!!) however they are much, much harder to care for, as most of the parasites they get find it difficult/cannot live at 30+c, i would personally keep them at 30-32c. as i have said before stability is the key to keeping discus, as all fish!
damien, just be careful treating fish at high temps. as most of the meds. will do damage to filter bacteria so keep an airstone/venturi running, and test water throughout the course of treatment!
you really need to quarrantine new stock, retailers cannot do this as it takes at least 6 weeks to do it properly which would cost a fortune, making say guppys €5+ etc ! however, we can condition fish/make sure they are fit for sale/feeding etc. what are the views on this?

i have had 2 discus in the tank for over a year with temp at about 28.5, and have had no issues. I also bought 2 from Des about 4 months ago and they have tried to breed at 28.5 ish. So i dont see 28.5 is a problem.
I also have cardinals + rummys + a couple of plecs and a couple of others in the tank and have only lost i think 1 fish in over a year and that included moving house.
I dont mind if fish are not quarantined... but I wish the shops would be honest about it and not claim that they are.

28.5 C is fine for discus. Go to 32 degrees with your whitespot. No need for medication. All they do is use up oxygen in the water and possibly do damge to your filter bacteria.
I know, nothing for weak nerves but it will work. Add a few almond tree leaves to your tank. They will keep the bacteria count down.
But you should really have quaranteed any new fish.

I learned the hard way.
Always use proper quarantining procedures regarding fish.
