Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Caudal Fin Rot

I have a single fish (a small Angel) that has Caudal fin rot. Normally with fin rot I treat the tank with Melafix but i'd like to just treat this fish in isolation and was wondering the best way to go about this.

Any suggestions?

Do you have a quarantine tank set up?

Hi LB,

No, no quarantine tank. Only think I have is a livebearer breeding hatch. He's only a tiny angelfish though.

Tks.

Id avoid putting him in a breeding hatch, not the best for angels regardless of his size (how big is he by the way?).
Also may I ask why you dont just treat with Melafix in the main tank anyhow? Its harmless, and while some peoples experience of it may not be very effective,I find that melafix does improve finrot if caught in the early stages. Not withstanding that,I have used it recently on my tank for an angel who has the above mentioned problem that you have and I found no improvement for him. I think water changes is probably the only long term solution. The angel may be stressed perhaps also?,this can have an effect on his conditon,or perhaps its being bullied?

Hi Gavin,

He's less than the size of €2 coin. 15% of water is changed every week, all the fish are thriving, he's not being bullied and is not stressed; just think he might have had a spot of it when I bought him.

No problem treating with Melafix in the whole tank but I try to avoid putting anything into the water if at all possible and he is the only one needing treatment.

Tks.

Angel fish this size can develop problems, they are sold extremely young nowadays and are suspect to problems. I bought a beautiful white marbled angel fish some months ago and he just never settled into the tank,he was fine initially however eventually began to hover alone in one area, then he stopped eating. This can happen juvenile angels.
Id go with dosing the whole tank to be honest. The breeding nets arent ideal for this time of treatment and arent really a quarantine tank. Anyhow if its a breeding trap then you will have water mingling between the main tank and the breeders trap anyhow?
