Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

worms and moving things in my tank?

Ive just done my weekly water change and to my suprise, Ive come across some nasties in one of my tanks. Ive tried taking pic but they are so too small to get a proper photograph.
I siphoned out the water from the tank and just as I was about to dump it I noticed alot of small particles moving. I thought it was just poo initially but on closer inspection realised it wasnt the water movement that was making these "particles move" but actually that the particles were indeed some kind of a bug. They appear to have tiny tiny type feet although it was expectionally hard to spot that. They are round in shape not more than 1mm in size. They swim around the water almost like little beatles, but again are impossible to describe more accuratlely without the use of a magnifing glass or the like. They are black in colour but I was trying to make them out more closer and THINK they may have some mild stripes also. However to my naked eye they were black and round. When I took them out of the water with a straw siphon they didnt move so Id imagine they are water dependant. There was lots of them, they were in the dirt amongst the gravel after I siphoned the gravel, I dont ever see them swimming in the tank.

Now when I emptied the water from the dish, I then noticed a small slimy narrow looking worm. It was sliding up the side of the tank, there appears to be a few of them. They are about 1mm or so long, and you can clearly see a worm type appearance, they slither along. They are a dark cream almost mustard type colour in appearance.
Can anyone help me please, I havent added any new fish recently or introduced anything new to the tank in months. I have noticed some of my fish have had stringy poo for a while which I felt could of been worms but I didnt treat them for it as itwas only on one or two of them.(usually the same molly).
Please HELP, what do I need to do now. Ive just done a 35% water change.
Ideally need to get some meds today if possible.

Gavin

Gavin there is no need to treat the tank.
I dont know what the little black things are but i have come across them before. If i leave java moss in a tub for a month or so and lift up the moss they will be in the bottom of the tub. They could be a non-parasitic mite or ostracod (spelling).

The worms could be Planaria, tread worms or any of a number of worms found in aquariums. Again harmless.

I dont know what you are feeding the Molly with the string poo but it could probably just need more greens in it's diet. Spirulina or algae wafers might do the trick.

Thanks Platty, muchly appreciated. That has put my mind as ease, will keep an eye on it over coming fews weeks when Im doing water changes, all the fish seem happy enough in the tank anyhow. And I released 3 more guppy fry from the breeding net to the the main tank now as well.

Hi Gavin
This must be the week for finding beasties in tanks....Just done a pruning job on some plants and discovered a damsel fly nymph in among the cuttings, looks to me like a Azure damselfly "coenagrion puella",I have him out of the tank, going to let him acclimatise to cold water and then release him into garden pond. They are common in Ireland but most of my plants came from the UK so I reckon that's were he came from.
