Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Corydoras trillinateus eye problem

Where do I start, I upped my C. Trillinateus(sold as julii) number from 3 to 8 yesterday becasue 3 cory's of one species isn't enough IMO and they weren't active. It worked and all of them are out and about.
I notice in one of my original cory's some sort of cloudiness over the eye and they seem to be a bit swollen, it might have been there a while but like mentioned earlier they weren't out much before they got their 5 new friends.

ammo-0
trItes-0
trAtes- less than 10

Anyone have a clue what to do now?

Hi Astrid. Usually when fish have cloudy eyes it is a sign of illness.
Rather that using a medication i would make sure the water is kept clean and feed them good quality food. A food with garlic added can be beneficial.
Sorry i cant help more.

I don't think I can clean my water anymore, I do wc every 4 days, their diet consists of a good variety of frozen food, jmc catfish pellets, algae wafers, NLS pellets and the odd bit of veggies.
He/she doesn't seem sick and is very active since the tankmates came, the other thing is that the barbels are nearly non existing but he came to me like that. This would be one of my original stock and in the tank from day 1 (after the cycle)

I would only feed the NSL for the moment. This has garlic in it which is great for boosting the immune system in fish.
If the eye/eye's get worse or other fish show signs of the same problem then there are a couple of things to look at.

Bad water quality. Since you keep your water very clean this shouldn't be the problem.
Bacterial infection. Not likely since there would be other obvious signs like blood streaked fins, open sores, reddish colouring of the body or head etc.
viral disease. I'm not to sure about symptoms of viral diseases so you may have to look it up. But if it is it wont be very treatable and viral diseases spread through out the tank quickly. By the time you know you have a problem it is to late.
Tumor. Sometimes fish can get a tumor behind the eye pushing against the eye making it look swollen.
Diet. If a fish is not getting the right nutrition. But this is not the case here since you feed them a well varied diet.
Eye damage. The fish could have scraped the eye of something in the tank. This usually heals in a couple of days.

Apart from an injery to the eye there is one other possible cause that i can think of. That is eye flukes. These are caused by a parasite using snails as an intermediate host. They leave the snail and attack the eye.
The fish wont die but it will end up blind. After the swelling goes down the cloudiness stays and starts to take on a blue appearance. This can take several months.

I would keep up the good water quality and look out for any secondary problems or changes in behaviour.
I wouldn't treat with meds untill i knew what the problem was. Meds might just stress and weaken the fish making things worse.

I wouldn't worry about the barbels. This happens if they are kept in a tank with rough substrate.

Sorry to hear about your Cory. I think Platty summed it up perfectly there and I would discount water quality issues also given that you do keep your tanks well. Ive just lost a Golden Ram this week to a similar problem of the eye. It ended up being swollen etc. Cant understand why as the tank is clean, the food is right and all seems fine. I suppose fish can get tumours at times alright that does effect them, Ironically it was over a period of a month or two that it took before it eventually killed the fish, and even then she wasnt in any ill health until a day or two before passing away, she was eating away fine etc...Also the eye was merely bulging, there wasnt even signs of blood in the eyes either so Im ruling out eye flukes although the body of the fish did appear slighty battered looking but cant imagine it was from anything other than a few bites after she had died.
Hope your cory gets better,if it seems ok at the moment Id just keep an eye on it and see where it goes. Dont think meds are necessary at this stage either.
