Question re: installing a new filter
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Folks,
I've purchased a new Eheim Aquaball filter for my tank and intend running it in tandem with my current filter to give it a chance to build up its flora of beneficial bacteria before removing the old one.
Question is, how long should I leave them both running before its safe to remove the old filter? Or , does anybody have any advice on a better way to carry out the change?
Cheers!

wot about filling the new filter with some already mature media from the old one .... therefore enabling you to use it immediately

It depends on the fish load in the tank and your maintainence, I would personally remove the sponge from the old filter and rub it on the new filter sponges in the aquaball and then run both of them in tandem for 2 weeks. If its possible to cut some of the old sponge and put it in the aquaball better again.

I'm planning a new external filter next month and What I'm going to do is cut the sponges from my current Juwel filter in half. Then I'll put one half of each in the new external filter in the relevant trays. With the new filter seeded I should be able to run the 2 simultaneously for 4 weeks and then whip the juwel out of there (its an unsightly lumpand takes up so much space). 4 weeks might even be a bit much but either way keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrites for a few days after you remove the old filter and if possible keep it in some tank water so that the bacteria don't die and you can put it back in if the new filter isn't doing its job yet.
I've read of other people just putting all the old filter media into the new filter and throwing out the old filter straight away. You do have the same amount of bateria in the new filter then but unless the old filter media fit the new filter quite tightly then I wouldn't do that.

Homercles the Eheim aquaball dont hold a lot of filter media and IMO are for only small fish loads.
What filter are you replacing? What size tank is it? and what fish are in there?

It's a 54L tank Platty. It contains a Honey Gourami, couple of Neon tetras, 2 Pencil fish and 3 cherry shrimp.
Had thought about placing a piece of the old filter media in the new filter, but rubbing the old filter sponge on the new seems like a good idea also. I think I'll do both and run them in tandem for a month and see how I get on. The aquaballs are expandable as well if need be.
thanks for the suggestions guys.

As suggested above i would put some of the existing media in to the bottom section of the new filter.
Then every week i would remove some of the media in the old filter untill there was none left.
This way the new filter will have a chance to catch up and you wont be removing the old media prematurely or in one go.
