Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All,

My name is Tom Brecknell and I have been in and out of the Forum and fish keeping depending on my home and work demands. I always have a tank or two going at my house and I first joined the ITFS about 15 years ago.

When I joined the forum for the first time I used an assumed name as I wanted to hide in the background so nobody would know who I was. I used the name FRONTOSA as my very good friend Derek Doyle was breeding F1 Zaire Blue Frontosa’s at the time. Still something not many people have done to this day.

The reason for this post is that I think everybody should use their own name and put a picture of themselves up as well. Most people sign their posts with their own name anyway. So if you go to a show or a club meeting you will know the person on sight, which could make your first meeting with everybody a lot less awkward for you, and you can avoid them if you want. (Ha! Ha!) The last time this was suggested was a couple of years ago, a few people did change their names, but then again, I think everybody should. This is just my opinion not a request or an order.

Happy Fishkeeping,

Tom Brecknell.B)

Yes it is a good idea and all new members signing up are asked to change their user name to their real name. Existing members can change their username, it is better not to include spaces between forename and surname, it affects PM messages.

Anyone wishing to change their username and having problems, please PM me.

I can see where the idea comes from, but I think most people who are on here regularly get to know peoples proper names anyhow,I think a username is something that most people like to have, often a nickname or something.(Mine is probably the most unoriginal ever!!!).So in terms of using someones full name, Im not so sure, some people use the same username for many sites,eg msn, yahoo, other forums etc..
I dont think it brings a great deal of issues to be honest, as I said I think most people know the names of their fellow fishkeepers after a small while on this site anyhow, the majority of people sign their full name at the bottom anyhow.
Thanks
Bertie Aherne.

Ps: Ok its Gavin!! But you get the idea!

This is great, i've always used my real nick name 'ian' in all aquatic forums I'm a member with and it can be traced to me on my years of fishkeeping, I can also post up a pic or maybe out profile can have another field for Id picture versus an avatar you use for the posts

Fishkeeping CV: Co-founded, 1st President of the only surviving Fishkeeping Club (Accredited by Dept. of Fisheries) in the Philippines (mypalhs.com). I have mostly reared tropicals - Arowanas and monster fishes. My oldest arowana is 13years old (died in a tropical storm). Ive since reared a Black,...

i think a lot of people still like anonimity on the web

i used to use my real name and then when you search
your own name you get everything you have ever said on the web
and therefore so can anyone else, which may bother some, myself included

people who have pm me or been pm'ed by me
know my real name and thats enough for me

there are all sorts of oddballs on the web
and I would rather use my nickname

im staying fourmations!!

Im with Four on this one. I think people like to remain anonymous at times.Again most people know each others names anyhow if they have been on the forum for a small while.

Me too, it's not this forum I don't trust but the wider internet, plenty of con artists , freaks, religious zealoits and racist nuts out there, would rather my name didn't pop up in a search engine. If I had my name as my username from this forum alone someone could get for intance: The area I live in, My age, Old Job, Current line of work, and IP address, thus my internet service provider, They can then use that info to find out the sites I visited and posted on, Gaining more info. I used to work in a company that search engineers websites, It's shocking how simple it is to hack some sites even with encryption. Some of you already know my name and I don't mind anyone here knowing who I am, Jim is my nick name everyone calls me, But Jim/Trimax is the only info i'll post on a searchable part of this sight in any one page.

When reading older threads on this forum the other day I noticed a post from a certain username saying something to a poster like "From your IP I see you live in Canada..etc" Sorry but thats messed up! people shouldn't be prying and into anything other then the info thats been openly displayed on the users account page. It's like going through a strangers wallet/handbag to find thier passport ! Not on.

That's crazy thinking like that, I admit saying once "I see your are in north america by your IP addressee" it was from a new poster claiming to be in Dublin, using american words like awesome , and words only American use, there was another time I said I see you are on the north side by your IP addressee, it was an A..... team joke, I was only guessing and I had a no time bother to check their IP addressee. How can one be so paranoid of someone finding out about you on the web hell if you google: sean connolly Majorca or sean connolly sky digital.

I like the España telefonica joke that was very good:laugh:

Here is one of my latest pranks:P

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!
