Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Bit of a Smelly Tank

Just set up a 100l "quarantine" tank and its been running for the past 2 weeks with one fish in it, the chiclid isnt sick just got picked on in main tank due to his size. Anyways over the past 2 days a I was getting a bit of a smell from it, like a mouldy smell. I did a nitrate test- no probs there (yellow- with tiny tint of orange). I think i remember this with my main tank but that (smell) went, i am using 2 filters (Boyu cannister filter ef 05 and an aqua flow 100), its in the utility room which doesnt get much traffic so the flow of air in that room would not be as good as elsewhere in the house,
anyone have any ideas,

Thanks
Tommyt

hi Tommy

a quick water change and carbon or replace carbon!

with reference to the s Boyu cannister filter ef 05 i have one would not recommend it. the pipe will disconnect very easily. and if it is the outlet wet floors. cheap does a good job for it size but the piping supplied

"Boyu cannister filter ef 05" I agree the hoses are absolute muck, 3w and flow rate is almost a trickle, just got it on ebay for half nothing, luckily the room is tiled :) , was going to try and get some 12mm/9mm flexible hose and use it instead, I had a vernier but misplaced it and I think that is the DIA's,

thats interesting about the carbon reducing teh smell, or is it the old carbon that causes it?
Cheers,

T

hi Tommy
with carbon it holds so much but once it is maxed out it will release everything back into the water thus has to be replaced regularly!

yes i was thinking the same just not got round to it but well worth a try

as far as filters go its not bad yes the flow rate is very slow but very suitable for some fish and other amphibians or older fry tanks.

in fact i was planning on two of these for a future axotlotl project on either end of the tank to protect the gills from high current and stress due to water movement.

i have used mine with Carassius auratus and did a good job and now it works with a powerhead filter who's name i forgot and is so old i cant read with three of my plecs (two common biggest 15 inches) and what is either a an albino common or one of the golden but have to get some one to id it for sure and does a good job but yes it is not for every tank and priming it is a pain

Mickey,
If I have any luck with the hoses i'll let you know, there is a similar cannister filter- more power but it wont blow your socks off (Eden 501 Filter)- might be of some interest to you, I washed the carbon in the tanks water yesterday and no smell today, will swap it out if it comes back ,
cheers,

I've been told and read somewhere that washing your filter media it in tap water will kill off bacteria so wash the media in the some of your tank water, not sure if the carbon actually hosts bacteria or jsut catches the chemicals in the tank - I'm no expert so maybe someone else can shed some light,
just saw this link regarding carbon www.bestfish.com/tips/031199.html
