Is this a fungus? White Growth on Neon Tetras
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Please Help.
My Neon Tetras are all still eating and darting around but 3 (of 7) have started displaying a white growth on their mouths.
One of them is particularly large, not stopping eating but after getting bigger.
I have tried to get some clear pictures but hard to get the camera to focus on the fish and not the tank/rock/plants etc.

Cant see any pics??? maybe its just this computer tho??
I had fungus growing around my tetras mouths a few years ago...was kind of white cotton like growths if that sounds similar
If i remember right the lads on here told me to use a salt bath and/or treat them with Malachite green (found in some whitespot treatments)
Cleared up nicely in a couple weeks if i remember!
Ill check on another comp to see if i can see pics later!

Could be Columnaris. Treat with something like Esha 2000 or as Alan suggested Malachite green (albeit that the Esha 2000 has this in it anyhow). Depending on how severe the case is, the fish may or may not recover. Ive had molly's who have gotten this and none recovered. Mostly its around the fish's mouth and gills. Also its quite contagious so Id get those 3 infected into a Quarantine tank if you have one and treat both tanks separatly if possible. If the fish are really struggling and become somewhat liveless then consider euthanasia as sometimes it can just be too far gone and the fish wont survive.
Best of luck with it.
Gavin

Hi,Gavin's treatment is the way to go i think, esha 2000 is a pretty all round medication also i find it a bit harsh so follow the instructions.i'd add a bit of salt too.
Let us know how they get on.

Hi Norrie,
if you look at the flanks of the fish its looks quite thin, so the fish is weak this fish wont tolerate much netting or salt baths, in fact they don't like any salt in the water for the same reasons south american rams crook with salt. Malachite green will remove the fungus but fresh water tetras like marine wrasses don't tolerate a full dose of malachite green , it must be only pale green, only noticeable looking length way through the tank and not notable front to back, it would take require dose every second day for 6 days to do the trick, Sera Costapur has malachite green in to.
That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Fingers crossed for me lads. The growths all seem to be receding.
The fish are all eating very well (never stopped TBH) and never slowed down.
