is the fish gone blind?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a bala shark about 6 or 7" and today he has white eyes like cataracts in a person. is this a parasite or could he have just gone blind overnight. there would have been water issues over the bad weather spell and a bit of agression lately but I am worried about him. he knows the tank really well by now so its hard to tell if he just knows his way around or if he can still see.
any suggestions welcomed
thanks

Sometimes the damage is due to incorrect water perameters causing a decline in the health of the Cornea leading to fungal or bacterial infection, check the other residents to see if they are affected in the same way.
Occasionally damage is through accidents, bumping into decor when startled, if it's fungal you must sort out water and treat.
Fish have a lateral line that is flooded with receptors and fish use these for night foraging etc, like blind cave fish, while the opaqueness doesn't look atractive the fish can live quite well without vision.

Hi Nessa, is it both eye's?
Keep an eye on him/her for secondary infections. The eye may be just cloudy indicating the fish is ill and it just isnt noticeable yet.
As Kev said it will be fine if it is gone blind.
Keep the water clean and dont forget there is Ammonia coming from the tap at the moment so use a dechlorinator with an Ammonia remover in it.

thanks for the help lads. I figured he would be ok if he went blind alright but I dont want him to. As for the water parameters our water is crap at the moment if we have any at all. I have had a few deaths in other tanks after water changes even with dechlorinators etc. We are not drinking it at home either. ph is wild and changes all the time. I have had a ph crash after a water change recently so I have been trying to balance changes with not changing water etc.
another thing that has crossed my mind is the amount of lime they are putting in the water at the moment. Our water is cloudy from the tap. It settles down and goes clear eventually but I am sure this cant be good. Has anyone had any experience of this. I will test the water again today and I am curious if it has had a major effect of the hardness.
thanks again

Hi Nessa.
That's terrible, so sorry to hear you are having such trouble. Looks like you have to weather the storm, there is a poly filter that will remove Ammonia from your water very quickly and you could, if you can get it, use some RO water but it's a pain when water, the Fish's life blood is coming to your House already fooked up.

Nessa the water is all over the place at the moment.
The PH, GH, KH, Ammonia and Nitrate are changing on a regular basis.
The cloudy water you are getting is called turbidity and it is supposed to be monitored before it reaches our houses. But with all the work going on with the leaking pipes it is hard to avoid. All it takes is someone to bang one of the main water pipes and all the crap gets flushed through the pipes. Along with this you get these fine bubbles.
You need to let the water sit (about 24 hours) to let these micro bubbles dissipate from the water. Don't use the water when it is not clear.
I remember someone telling me that these fine bubbles can end up in the blood of the fish.
If you need polyfilter give me a shout. You can run this in a small filter while your water is sitting before use.
Or if you need RO made up let me know.

well the news is as bit better today his eyes are still cloudy but they are not that horrible creamy cataract colour they were yesterday so illness and water are in the lead. Blindness seems to be ruled out. I tested the water again and now I have serious hardness which I never had before its over 16d and its a real struggle to keep it up at 6 usually. But I have no ph again. the reading is too low to be accurate but 5.5 to 6 is a good guess. The ph is usually 6.8 so no wonder he was feeling unwell. Nitrate is normal and no3 is 0 so thats good. Ammonia is 0 too.
The water was sitting for 3 days before I used it this time and I used new life with it. I also cleaned out the external filter just in case it was under pressure so a mixture of all may have made a difference. The fish are still not right though so melafix is the next port of call for secondaries. The other sharks gill is swollen and bright red on the inside. Is this flukes or internal parasites do you think. I dont think I need to use RO yet but thanks for the offer. If things change I will let you know.
thanks for the help
