Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Arrived home from work this morning to find one of the female macmasteri chasing the other female around the tank. I knew these could be a bit aggressive so didnt pay too much attention to the goings on. Yesterday I introduced peat to the filter and figured I would test the ph this morning when I got in to see what it was and upon opening the hood I spotted the male dead as a nail on the bottom of the tank :( :( .
I quickly removed the weaker female and placed her in another tank. The aggressive female and the dithers (two pearl danios) are fine. I then tested the ph and found it to be around 6.0. My ph is usually 7.0. What I would like to know is did the sudden change in ph kill the male or might it have been this crazy female, who, I should mention is only half the size of the dead male? Not a good start with apistos  .

could possibly have been ph shock which will and can kill fish almost instantly.... i found this out the hard way a few years ago, the solution is to slowly adjust the ph up or down as required as a fast change can kill if not serious injury fish and burn their gills...

I just had a pike around the planted tank as I put peat in the filter of that tank also and as far as I can tell there have been no losses in there. The ph in there is reading 6.0 also and the stock seem fine. Just tested the water in the apisto tank for signs of the usual suspects but all readings are in the green.

Jay, check for spawn in the Tank.

I plagerised this excerpt from another website lol but it is interesting if a bit short.

"I traded for these and have had several spawns. Mine are in soft water, neutral pH, and a TDS of under 150. I do have a truly mean 'black widow' female. Every spawn gets the male killed. My pH creeps up and seems to give me extra males. Right now my first female is on her 4th male. I think this male suspects death is near. After 3 weeks he still refuses to spawn with her."

I have found female Macmasteri to be one of the most aggressive of all the Apistos, I once had a female 'Mac' which killed off a succession of males I introduced to her.
That's not to say your fish didn't succumb to the dreaded 'pH crash' though - a sudden drop from 7 to 6 is a huge drop which smaller fish would not be able to handle (but then again the female was ok...) did you buy these recently? If so I would ask of the shop are their other Apistos OK? As some shops will tell you, the attrition rate on recently arrived Apistos can be quite high.
But it's still tragic, whatever the reason - sorry to hear of your loss.

Thank you all for the replys. I just found the female that I removed from the tank belly up in the planted tank. Im guessing it may have been a combination of the sudden change in ph and the aggressive females' attacks. No sign of spawn. Will try another male with the aggressive female as soon as I can. Im stickin this one out  .

Sorry to here of the loss, could be a mix of the both i guess. One way of slowly lowering ur ph, you could get a wheelie bin or a water but and hook up ur filter with the peat in it and fill with water and use that to lower the ph to 6 and slowly drop the ph in the tank over a few weeks.

Thats what i plan on doing with my tank
