Catfish swimming upside down with cloudy eyes
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi lads, as the title says I have a catfish swimming upside down at the moment with cloudy eyes, basically never see this catfish during the day so when I saw him swimming around at the top I knew something was up. The year before last an 8" Bala shark in this tank started off the exact same way and I lost about 40 fish within a couple of days. Anyone seen these symptoms before and have an idea what it could be or what treatment may help?
Thank you
Tom

Just an update, I decided to check the filter etc and it was for some reason half out of the socket. So basically the filter has been off for perhaps 2 weeks, maybe more. The filter etc are wired through the living room wall and into a press, I can only guess that someone must have pulled on the wire by mistake which pulled it out. I've done a very large water change and gave it a good going over with the gravel vac. Luckily enough my father always insisted on leaving the undergravels in..so it looks like that's why the fish haven't presented any problems up until now. Hopefully Ive caught it in time.
Cheers
Tom

Sorry to hear your news Tom,
I do hope the water change, along with the plugged in-again filter does the trick and that you don't suffer a repeat of your last episode.
My guess would be that the U/Gs have helped stem the worst and that, as a result of them being working, your power filter will 're-charge' with bacteria more quickly than it would have done otherwise.
You might consider attempting to plunge the intake tube of your filter (assuming it's an external)? into the gravel for a few hours to allow it to collect some of the gravel's valuable contents.
Hope all goes well, please let the Forum know how things progress - I bet you'll be keeping a closer eye on plugs and sockets in the future? :o)

hi Tom
sorry to hear about your problems FYI- I seem to remember you could buy a lockable plastic cover which you could fit over a socket and prevent plugs from being removed by anyone ....let me have a think about were i came across them.

Hi Tom,
sorry to hear your news...
We use these in work when we install servers and other equipment into areas where other people tend to unplug things they shouldn't, and they work very well! another option, although a little more expensive, would be to buy a UPS and put this in.
