Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey folks,

So I got in from work yesturday evening to find my three big Silverdollars and my two Oscars washed out and sulking behind their usual hiding spots. I immediately knew something was wrong because the Oscars would normally thrash about and make noise to get ny attention so Ill feed them. I dropped in some waxworms for them and some flake for the Silverdollars and nothing budged. I had only tested the water two days ago before a waterchange and all was well. I tried hand feeding the Oscars with the worms as I usually do and felt the water water was pretty chilly. Turns out I never plugged the heater back in after topping off the tank. Normally I check everything but that day the phone rang an I walked away without doing it. Over the course of two days the temperature dropped about 10 celsius to 17 degrees  . The tanks volume is 400 litres and I was suprised haw quickly the temp dropped in it, but its been cold lately and Im usually not around so the heating in the room was off. I managed to get the temp back up but Im expecting and outbreak in the tank after such a big drop in temperature. Ive been considering dosing the tank with meds to head off any infection but am unsure if this is wise right now. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Oh, feel free to let loose with the stick...well deserved.

And not one of us has ever done something similar??? - "without sin" and "cast the first stone" are parts of quotes which spring to mind.

I would suggest - and this is merely a personal opinion - you watch closely for the next week or so for symptoms of maladies, in the case of White Spot there is (as far as I'm aware) nothing to prevent an outbreak and it is only vulnerable to treatment when the initial 'spot' cysts leave the host fish to reproduce. But I'm open to correction - so many advances with disease treatment have been made in modern times that it's a bit hard to keep up with it.
And you're right - the fish will be a little 'delicate' for a while, but I would do a couple of water changes and only build up the feeding gradually over the course of the next few days - and only add medication if anything unpleasant rears it's ugly head!

Hi,
a good few years back i had electricity cut off for 3 days after a huge storm, very stressful with 2 big oscars in a tank...the temp dropped to about 15C.no filter,no heater and the poor guys were literally burying themselves in the gravel!!!was adding hot water bottles to warm them up a bit and small water changes through out the days.looooong 3 days:S
power back, raised the temp to 20 then 25 the next day and they made it:)
i'd just keep an eye on your parameters but it should be alright:)
good luck!

Cheers lads. They seem to be doing a lot better today. Colour has returned to the Oscars but the Silverdollars are hiding since the lights came on but I did see them swimming about earlier in the dark so Im hopefull they will bounce back. Thanks again,
