Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Low PH Readings

Hi All,

I only check my PH readings from time to time but today I noticed readings of only 5 in both of my tanks. After that I checked my tap water and that was 5 also. A few months ago it was 6.5 .

I'm in the Dublin 8 area and was just wondering if anybody else has similar readings. All the fish
in both tanks seem to be doing fine. My corydoras even spawned Saturday in my 60L tank even though the eggs have gone a funny yellow colour. I honestly think they may not be fertilised but I should know by tomorrow. Any info would be appreciated as low ph will affect the biological filtration I believe.

Thats very low for tap water. Are you using a meter ? Are you sure its working properly ?

Sorry about that mistake. Got tested in LFS and subsequently by my auntie who has PHD in microbiology.

Are you saying that using different test equipment, all 3 came up with the exact same pH values?

What test system did you use for your tanks and tapwater?

pH is temperature dependant....so tap water's pH would change with time due to carbon dioxide and temperature increases.

Yep. Your biological filtration system is pH sensitive. pH below about 5.5 are generally considered a danger sign for nitrfication.

I would honestly consider the test method used....did everyone use a colorimetric test or an electronic probe?

Hi All,

Just tested my PH readings again and got some strange results again.

My community tank came up with readings of about 7.0-7.5(Happy with that.) There is a large type of ornamental rock which I think may be limestone and no real plants present. All fish appear to be happy and I do water changes of 25-30% every 3 weeks.

In my smaller 60L tank with 2 adult Corydoras and 10 of their 6 month old fry, I came up with a reading of 6.0. There are no rocks present or live plants in this tank. I do water changes of 25-30% weekly.

I went on then to check my tap water which reads about 7.5 (straight out of the tap) but will test again after 5-6 hours after leaving in a test tube.

Funnily enough my LFS tested my 60l and my tap water(straight out of the tap) the other week and came up with readings of 5.0. for both!!

I tested with API liquid PH test kit range 6.0-7.6 so it could well be that the 60L tank is only 5.0!

I'm looking at my 60L tank now and the Corydoras are flying.

bring samples from both tanks and straight from the to your LFS and get them to test three samples. Compare results.
