changing from Organic aqua

Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Lads
Question Re organic Aqua....
Suppose you have a tank which was established using organic Aqua, what is the procedure for switching a tank back from organic aqua...? do you just stop adding a maintenance kit and let the filter (which has been running for a few weeks ) take over...? or do you have to follow some other procedure...? Can you expect spikes of some kind...?
Thanks... Lar

Moved - sigh, the things people will do to try to overtake Duzzy's thread count...(shrugs shoulders in disbelief).

When you're close to adding an organic aqua treatment (a month after the last one), the filter should have started cycling. Don't add any more Organic and check your parameters daily. Do water changes as necessary. Ideally, it would speed the process up if you could add some established filter media to your filter.
Are there any people on the site near you that could give you some established media?
Regards,
Ken.

Hi Ken
Cheers for that ...I've plenty of media in other tanks, the tank involved was set up in a hurry to accommodate an unexpected arrival and although I've seen lots of advice on forums on setting up tanks with O/A I hadn't seen much info on reverting back.I have to say I'm most impressed with O/A ....it really does do what it says on the tin but the need to add maintenance kits every month on an ongoing basis is an expense I could do without at the moment. Thanks for your reply

As Ken says, simply start to perform more regular water changes when ur at the end of the month and start to keep an eye on ur test results. When using OA I often advise using a purely mechanical media so if reverting back to trad methods it would be better to use more biologically suitable media (ie not purely filter wool!).
When using OA the results u get from testing for any of the nitrogen compounds are not reliable but one test I do recommend performing is for pH. This is important to monitor in any system particularly when not changing the water as regularly.
As I often advise people, OA is great for starting any tank and getting over the initial month and if u find it too expensive to use in an ongoing basis then u should consider a pond pack. I have outlined the breakdown of coatings using this kit in smaller aquaria in the thread- organic aqua revisited- which by the way has had over 6,000 hits at this stage!!!
Please feel free to contact me for further information about this or any other matters.
Cheers,
Steve
