Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Purchased my first test kit today just a question or two i need answered. It appears my ph is showing 7.6 on the normal ph test and 7.8 on the high range test. Tap water is identical. Is this an alright level, ive got mixed species of fish. Then my ammonia and nitrite both look good at 0. Nitrate is whats getting me, i cant tell if its 40 or 80 ppm the colours on the chart are nearly identical. The kit is API master test kit. Gonna try a water change and test again for nitrate. Will post result

DONT USE TEC 7 its not safe for aquarium buy some aquarium grade silicon and that will do the trick.

as for you test kit a water change should reduce your nitrate levels between 0 and 40 is ok but try keep it as low as you can by doing frequent weekly water changes.keep a eye on the ammonia and nitrites they should always read 0 ppm
the high ph is good if yor keeping the likes of cichlids who like a high ph.
what kind of fish are u keeping?

stephen

hi,
bought a digital ph meter because I thought its very hard to make out the reading on the colour chart it doesnt matter which brand test kit I had.For the rest of the tests I use the Nutrafin one and I am happy enough with it.

hi Turner85,
I have used tec 7 in aquariums with no problems at all, just make sure the one you use has the aquarium safe sign on the side of it, its a clear picture of a fish, smiling I think!
I looked at the different forms of tec 7 on a display stand recently and some are not aquarium safe.
it is fine for sticking slate ,rocks, wood etc together, but cannot be used for tank construction or anything that will be under pressure, it is not strong enough.

I agree with joe on the tec7, i used it to stick my background to the 125L with no problems (apart from messy hands)

On the test kit, i have the api master kit myself and i have a tank cycling, unless it reads 0ppm on ammonia or nitrite i find it hard to judge the actual levels. I'm not sure if my ph is 7.4 or 7.6. My nitrate is either 20 or 40. Not a great kit in my opinion. I saw a sera test kit for 45 euro or so online and was thinking of upgrading to that,it has alot more tests and comes in a plastic case.
