Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

List the Cichlids and I will tell you.
Even flake can be fatal to certain fish.

Oh no not another beefheart debate, despite the 7 pages recently post in the discus forum, and the gel mix in under misc of freshwater forum.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Land Animal Meat shouldnt ever pass a Malawi Cichlids mouth, which is what Im assuming you have!!
To get the little lads going do regular water changes and feed them live food once or twice a week like bloodworm.Feed them as often as possible in smaller amounts rather than the opposite.I have Tropheus fry from 3 weeks ago and they are already an inch long and very robust looking. As tempted as I was to help them along its just not worth it,stick to your guns and take your time! Its hard waiting around for fish to mature, thats one thing every single person on this forum can relate to.

I dont do it myself but it has been done with success for years now by many prominent breeders. It is proven to get Malawis into breeding condition and speed up growth once fed in moderation.

How are the Acei going?I hope you are not feeding them beefheart?  I have a bag of frozen spirulina and broccoli based food for you if you want to try some.

You will be eating Beefheart introveiniously if you mention Beefheat again.
My Acei are fine   Still have the ten you gave me.
I would never feed Malawi cichlids Beeefheart. I only fed it once maybe twice a week to my Discus and sometimes They did not get it for weeks and there was more fish in it than Beefheart. That Beefheart post got way out of hand and boring.
Two of my Leilupi have paired off, I need shells big time. Cant even buy Coconuts till October to use.

On the Bloodworms.. They are just chocolate for fish. Malawi have trouble breaking them down. They can contain parasites. Uv treatment does not kill all the parasites/bacterium. The packages they are sold in do not remain frozen all the time. Straptococi bacteria can have a field day form all the refreezing.
I usually go by the this rule. Fresh water food(bloodworms/)Tubefex for Marines and marine food(Krill/prawns) for fresh water fish. Helps prevent against certain parasites attacking your fish.ie.Fresh water parasites(though not all) cannot live in salt water and vice versa.

Tubefex(unless farmed) comes from stagnant ponds and can be riddled with everything.

I used to breed my own bloodworm during the summer months, well more cultivation than breeding.I havent done it in a while but it never caused any catastrophies.True enough what your saying about the frozen stuff though.
I remember back when I started off with cichlids I had an obese dominant male Ps. Saulosi (wouldnt happen nowadays!!) who used to go at the glass to get bloodworm. He dominated 8" C. Moorii and 5" Caeruleas out of their share, greedy pig.I eventually weened him off his bloodworm addiction and traded him in Kinsealy with Waldo (nice guy).He didnt know cichlids too well but he thought it was a juvenile Frontosa.
