Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

What your fish has is most likely Pop-eye. Being a Molly and most likely inbred, the gene in this fish is generally weak. Do the fish and yourself a favour and take the fish out. The problem is unlikely to spread to the rest of the in mates. Keep up your regular water changes and all should be ok. Fish do die and it's nothing to worry about. The lifespan of these fish is low also, it's probably just coming to the end of its tether.

If you can isolate the fish in its own tank and treat with a general cure like Melafix it may help.

Hi I would be inclined to used melafix also. I have used this succssfully to treat cloudy eye in the past with great results. You may need to persist with the treatment for several days Best of luck!!!!!

Its most probably after occuring due to another infection, and pop eye is usually a secondary infection. Its basically fluid behind the eye.Melafix wont do any harm but you'd be better off treating it with something like Esha2000 if you can get your hands on it or Sera Ommnipur or even Epsom salts. These treatments are good when you arent sure what the underlying illness is. The Melafix wont cure your fish. Keep up the water changes also will help.Remove any carbon you may have in your filter. Mollys are so inbred nowadays its hard to keep some of them alive,I wouldnt give up hope yet.Test your water,do the necessary changes,if you can isolate the fish then do,if not then do a water change.
The fish isnt dead yet,so dont give up hope, but ideally having an isolation tank for incidents like this is really important too. Of course you will have to make a decision eventually to risk keeping the fish in the tank and risk the rest of the fish in their getting something off this infected molly.Pop-eye is due to an underlying condition that the fish is suffering from.
