Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

3 days after getting some new fish, mollys and guppys, I noticed a white insect type of thing in the tank, I took it out and got rid, then I noticed another attached to the side of a molly and the molly was dead, in a state of panic I threw it out...wish I hadn't now as I could've taken a picture...anyway it was long with legs, under a cm long, flat, white in colour, when attached it was almost translucent
I have treated the tank for external parasites with JBL Argunol (spelling??)
Any body else ever had such a thing?? Any help or advise ??
Thanks

Does it look like one of these?
Damseyfly larvae

You wouldn't mind telling me where you bought them in a PM, that kind of thing is neglectfully irresponsible.

I would get a magnifying glass and look around at the other fish to see if any of them have anything on them.
If you can't get a picture, or identify from a picture, then do you have more of a description...eg general shape, placement of the 'legs', how it was attached to the molly.
I'm guessing at lice, but that is only a guess as it could be something that is not pathogenic but would maybe go for a dead fish to nibble.

I also ffe it is imprtant to know the source up such a parasite, so none of go to the same place and get an infection too.
Just the location would do, no need to name and shame, not allowed.

Do you think the parasite killed the fish or was just feeding of an otherwise sick fish.
What were the ulcerations like around the wound where the anomaly was found
What has the fish's actions been like prior to this infestation. (scratching etc.)
What was the fish deporting like in recent days before this occurred.

Are you using water from a rain barrel or a pond or something? Damsel flies are like smaller, more delicate dragonflies and its unlikely they would lay eggs in your tank unless its outdoors without a lid or something.
True enough, just thought as they had just added to the tank to have a look. No harm and these days you can't tell how long an lfs has had the fish or how they were cared for before you get them.
Is there any chance you can get a pictue of it on one of your fish?
If the fish were kept in open top containers and then shipped and you bought them a day later or possibly same day this can happen, not that I am sure this is your problem and it is important for the fish that you diagnose it right to use the best treatment.
There's some good stuff online, search damselfly laevae in my aquarium and usually you will get the treatment ect..
from site
mybackyard.info/backyardblog/?p=124
I have read that once the nymph leaves the water or is vac'd up they are gone unless you have them flying around inside your aquarium hood, they are usually a pond issue. They dont reproduce in the aquarium I read, if I am wrong someone on here will definately know.

I threw it and the dead fish out so can't get a picture, certainly wont do that anymore, if I notice any thing unusual I'll take pictures first!!
I've read up a bit about it and it seems its just a freak thing and once the larvae are taken out there has been no more trouble...I hope this is the case...I had started an external parasite treatment any way as I didn't know what the hell it was....so hopefully thats the end of it????
Thanks very much for all the help

They were probably in the well water and larger fish would be ok, those Nymphs are predators and the fish were small, no wonder they weren't able for it.
If you have em in the well, you can pour the water through some foam pads before you put it into the aquarium to remove larger objects and Nymphs.
All the best, don't be a stanger:)
