Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi noticed last night my female blue ram has pop eye on her right eye.
At first I though it was from fighting as she spawned on saturday night and gets quite agressive.
I have not got a quarantine tank to put her in . And would have te dost to buy one till the ned of the week

I am looking for some advise on how best to treat her.And if this is reversable,

Bacterial I'd guess, you need to get some anti-bacterial medicated food, best if you can get meds into the system via mouth. The fish probably hurt it's eye in defending a spawn site or in courtship. Popeye is more a reaction to fluid build-up behind the eye.

Kev.

Contact some of the Sponsors, Garlic, for some reason, alien to a Fish's diet, is an Immune enhancer, it seems to aid in the Fish's immunity or ability to fight attacks by various Pathogens, try to ALWAYS include food with added Garlic in it.

From a cost standpoint, it is always economical to use a Quarantine Tank if you can as the meds need to get to the Fish in question and if the affliction is causing the patient to be slow or disinterested he/she may not actually manage to eat any.

This quote is taken from a website called Flippers and Fins.net
www.flippersandfins.net/pop-eye.htm

The good news is that pop-eye is not often fatal, especially if given proper treatment. Pop-eye will sometimes even go away on its’ own with no treatment. As pop-eye is generally not very contagious, one fish expert, Dr. Chris Andrews, recommends observing your fish with pop-eye, while left in the main tank, to see if he gets better on his own or not. If the other previously healthy fish in the tank begin to get pop-eye, he then recommends isolation and treatment of the affected fish. I would advise that you search carefully for the cause of the pop-eye as discussed in this article and treat accordingly. If you cannot figure out the cause, then I recommend treatment with either Kanacyn or Maracyn-Two (if outside the USA use Waterlife's Myxazin or Interpet's #9 Anti Internal Bacteria), for a possible bacterial infection, in a separate hospital tank. Treating in a hospital tank allows you to isolate the sick fish from the healthy others and medicating a smaller tank means lower medication costs.

Even with proper treatment, your fish may be left with a grotesque eye and fish have even been known to “lose” the eye, that is, the eye becomes detached from its’ socket. Losing an eye is not necessarily traumatic for a fish. Fish can live a relatively normal life with just one eye, except that they can have problems with depth perception, that is, knowing how close or how far things are away from them. This can make swimming and eating a bit of a challenge. A fish that is blinded in one eye should not be destroyed, as they most often can live out a healthy and full life!

Thanks mate ,

it is not nearly as bad as any in the pictures on the link and unless you look closley you would not see it .
She is one of my favorites and has a great personality so that last thing I would want is to euthinise her , she is the first to the glass when the lights are turned on or i enter the room .

I will try the garlic in the food . She is still active though and is one of the matriarchs of the tank , she is still protecting her territory and keeping the others in check . She has also had no problems with eating . I am more concered if it spreads or is causing her pain
