ram with swollen mouth
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My male ram has what i can only describe as a swollen/deformed mouth...It looks almost like he has a large pice of food jammed in his mouth.......He is not showing any other symptoms....no white spots...no gasping...no fin clamping and no hanging at the surface...he is actually swimming as normal but i dont think he is able to eat.............Any ideas on a treatment....My water quality is pretty good...
0-ammonia,0-nitrite,10-nitrate,PH-7.0
110 litre planted tank with sand substrate....tetras,panda corys, ottos female ram and an ancistrus..........none of the other fish have signs of disease or illness

Pics please and is it v red looking? It sounds like an ulcer which in my experience regularly occurs in the rams on the market nowadays.

If it is ulcerated, it is suggested you Apply 10% Betadine (povidone iodine) on the affected area twice a day for three days. Partial change of water would be good. To me, on such small Fish, the stress might be worse than the Ulcer. Ulcers can result from Bacterial infection, eSHa 200 is an excellent med for your Tank but others suggest water changes, I think water changes are a great preventer but as you already have the problem, go with the meds.

Sorry to hear the news.
While I'm on, Corys do contract Bacterial infections from time to time, so keep up the Water changes and use eSHa 2000 as a preventative measure.

Lost a tetra now

( .....Im gonna start water changes in the morning and also treat the tank with the meds yas have suggested...............
How often, how much and for how long should I keep up the water changes and also when should I use the meds....
Wont water changes just dilute out the meds?

Just in case...............
I normally carry out 30% weekly water changes on this tank which up until now ive never had any problems with....
Also The Rams were new additions to the tank about 10 days ago so im guessing theyve brought this (infection/disease/parasite/pathogen) into the tank with them

In the tetra that died, was it sudden, was their a sign of any redness near gills etc..
Keep an eye on the other fish. You need to identify the source of the problem also, check the tank over to make sure there isnt any other dead fish,or fish behaving lathergic.
Esha2000 is a good all round med for a range of infections, so I would literally use it as it states on the bottle and work from there. Id do a water change firstly before adding the meds, and also ensure you have removed any carbon from the filter (if you have carbon present).
From memory the treatment is usually a 3 day treatment (just off the top of my head).

Another dead tetra

(
but everyone else is fine....checked water parameters for ammonia etc............all is good in that aspect...
all the other fish are good to go as far as i can see..........swimming around happily
did a 30% water change and added the treatment of eSHa 2000...will continue the treatment tomorrow and monday as its a 3 day treatment....hopefully that will be the end of the fatalities and things will get back to normal
