Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Callamanus Treatment - Help!

Hi Everyone,

I have a 54L tank with 6 neon tetras, 6 cherry shrimp running since christmas, never had any problems until I was given a gift of 4 guppies 3 weeks ago. The female guppies are pregnant and one is ready to drop her fry. Today while I was looking closely at her I noticed a red hair like spike coming from her vent, I had noticed this last week but assumed it was just stringy poop or something to do with the fish being pregnant. After doing research I'm 100% sure its Callamanus worm and the best thing that I can get my hands on quickly to treat it would be JBL Nemol which I can get tomorrow, or Sera Nematol (which I can get from Germany in about 10 days or so).

The fish is acting normal and eating well and obviously I want to get this treated as soon as possible so they can be moved to my 110L but both treatments can not be used with the shrimp in the tank.

If I move the shrimp to another tank will I be transferring the worms with them? Can invertebrates carry the worms?

Any advice on this matter would be HUGELY appreciated as I dont want to lose any of the fish or shrimp.

Never again will I skip quarantining!

Thanks in advance.

Jen

Jen,
Here's a link to a thread from Daragh Owens a couple of years back - it may be of help, I hope.

Thanks John, I'm going to get some JBL Nemol this morning. Really hope the shrimp can survive it! :-(( So far I can only see the worm on one fish I really hope I've caught it early enough.

Hi,

I treated on Tuesday morning with JBL Nemol but it doesn't seem to be working. I added another half dose extra last night because I figured I should be seeing the worm dying at this stage but still nothing, its really hanging in there. I've been trying to find some Levamisol HCL on the internet because that seems to be the best cure, but no luck.

Its still only the one fish showing symptoms so I'm hoping it stays that way!

Just like i thought
useless
I had same problem a while ago, used DRONTAL which is cat and dog worming tablets. Active substance is PRAZIQUANTEL which suppose to be very effective against all kind of intestine worms
I will not tell u any dosage cause don't want to kill your fish and if u decide to use it i wash my hands clean ;)
Anyways i crushed it into dust dissolved in water and mixed with some food
The only problem is that some of the fish doesn't like the taste of it.
Lvamisole HCL is hard to get cause is licensed for use with cattle only in this country even though, vets don't stock it and were very suspicious when i was talking about using it with tropical fish. Fail to get it anyway.
Didn't give up though and found treatment for tropical fish wit levamisole in it, in Poland. It's produced by ZOOLEK and the name is CAPITOX. Will be getting some in 6-7 weeks to have it stocked just in case ;)
will give u shout in case u still need it
good luck
Bart

Just an update!

I got some dog wormer containing fenbendazole today in powder form, mixed 3mls of the dewormer with 100mls of warm water and soaked brine shrimp in the solution for half an hour. Dumped the whole lot in the tank and am hoping to see some results soon. I was prepared to take the risk with the dog wormer rather than allow the little bugger to spread through the whole tank.

I'll keep the thread updated, hopefully this treatment will be successful and other will be able to gain from my experience!

Well day 3 and the worm is still there looking healthier than ever....

I dont know whether im dosing incorrectly or the fish arent eating enough of the brine shrimp, either way its not working :(

Im going to stop treating the tank for now until i can find a more effective treatment.

Just a quick update for anyone trying to get rid of this worm!

I think I've finally beaten it, a couple of days after stopping treatment the fish with the worm passed a large black stool(which I think was dead worms) and the worm passed with it, since then I haven't seen any at all and both female guppies have since dropped fry.

I lost all fish other than 3 guppies though :-(( I reckon the treatment could of killed off bacteria in my tank and I had a massive ammonia spike.

I'm hoping that this is the last I'll ever see of this worm and will be trying to get my hands on some Levamisol HCL to use as a preventative treatment when I decide to put any new fish into the tank.

I hope my experience can be a help to someone else!!

Hi,

I replied to a Post re these blasted Worms a while back but the person having the problem ordered meds elswhere, anyway, if anyone has problems with them I advocate the use of Jungle anti-Parasite Food, it works and contains Prazi and levamisole together. It isn't available here but can be bought over the Net, check out www.bigals.com it's a great chain of stores and very good online too.

Sera have a prescription free product that is supposed to work. I think it is called Nemotol.

From previous experience these guys are very hard to shift, so the correct dosage is essential and follow instructions about any follow up to deal with any eggs etc. even still I would keep that tank under careful observation for a few months after they appear gone.

I also see now that JBL has a new product specifically mentioning callamus worms, that might be worth a try and available locally.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I tried the JBL Nemol but it didn't work.

The dreaded worm made an appearance again this morning, a different fish this time.

Had a feeling it wasn't the last I'd seen of it, it just seemed to give up too easily

I'm going to give the anti-parasite food a go, I've got guppy fry now though, will they be able to eat it? or would an in-water treatment be better?

Thanks again everyone!

Got the CAPITOX treatment with levamisole the one I wrote about above
250mil contains 7,5gram of levamisole hydrochloride and 50miligram of methylene blue
tested it on my friends infected guppies, worked perfectly over couple of hours
