Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey all.

I'm going to give stocking up one more try before I have to resort to the drastic measure of canning everything in my set up and starting again (decor, pipes, filters, substrate etc)

I'm going to go get some angels tomorrow and possibly a pleco or two because the glass is getting destroyed too quickly.

Question is, how many fish can I safely introduce without overwhelming the chemistry and filter?

I have a Juwel Vision 180 tank with a Tetra Tec ex700 filter

Cheers!
Denver

Denver,
Can you please tell the Forum how long your tank has been cycling, what the water readings are - and anything else you can add.

Tank was cycled for just over 3 weeks before I introduced fish I had from a tank I already had It's been in full use for just shy of 3 months now.
I've had a possible bacterial problem which seems to be gone now after treating with eSHa 2000 and anti bacterial food Kev donated to me

All water readings are spot on what the should be. Ph is potentially .1 or .2 too high at 7.6, but ammonia, nitrate, nitrites are all on the money

There are currently 4 Penguin tetras, 3 neon's (i know the story with them and angels but getting juvies) a Molly and 3 head and tail lights and a Gourmi
All are perfectly happy, feeding frenzy every 2nd day.

20% water change once a week.

Hope this helps John?

Sorry Denver, I ought to have remembered your tank and previous history of it.
Sounds as though the problems before are now well and truly behind you.

I assume you don't have a quarantine tank so would caution against adding newcomers but if you're determined I think the very most you should add would be up to four juvenile Angels and - assuming you can get them - a couple of Bristle-nose Ancistrus plecos. These are better as they don't grow as large as some other readily-available Plecos.

Try to find out how long the Angels have been in stock for and buy the ones which are not 'this week's deliveries' and ask to see them feeding before you buy.

Look for the ones which 'rush' to get to the food first and try to buy the best-shaped ones.

As ever, with new additions don't increase the food amount given greatly for a week or so to allow the bacteria time to increase to compensate for the extra load created by new fish.

I expect there will be more advice during the course of the evening/morning.

Good luck.

Yea! the cheek of you forgetting my problems :silly:

You just confirmed the logical number I had in my head thanks! good advice on the feeding though. wouldn't have thought of that.

Unfortunately I don't have an incubation or quarantine tank so they'll be straight into the fray. I'd love to have kept my smaller tank for exactly this but my other half was having palpitations because it was "cluttering the place"

Yep will keep it at every 2nd day on the feeding front

Cheers!

Unfortunately partners are all-too conscious of what they like to call "clutter" - I blame these 'tidy-up' TV programmes myself.

Anyway, I wish you well and please let the Forum know how things progress, some pictures would be nice.

what i tend to do if i introduce a fair few fish in one go is do 10-15% water changes every couple of days for 1 or 2 weeks after again to allow the bacteria to catch up as every addition causes a mini-cycle in the tank. it might be better to get one species first, then introduce the other species after a few weeks so as not to overload the filter in one go

kinda agree with john here max 6 fish let it settle then for a week or two for the bio load in the filter to catch up, then another 6 or so and repeat the wait and continue doing this till your fully stocked

i would not worry (about water chemistry) putting in a couple of small angels and a small pleco (i'm hearing great stuff about the pitbull pleco, although i have yet to study it) just aclimatize them and away you go. test it and i bet you get no different readings (if you do, dont mention it here, i am making a tool of myself a bit lately and i could do without "dar all my fish are dead and it is all your fault" ) now if i was putting in 5ish, depending on size i would watch it like a hawk. but as you know the angels will be a gamble with the smaller fish

the glass is getting destroyed too quickly.

i would not be a fan of getting fish to clean my tank, that job lies with me and if i am getting algae i would try and find the cause and sort it out from there`. is the tank in direct sun light? i find my few plants and a dosing of easy carbo is doing a great job on my bit of green

Thanks Dar.
Saw this on the way to pick up the newbies.

I'm kinda the same, I enjoy the process of changing the water and cleaning the galss on a saturday but come tuesday there's a build up on the glass already and it bugs the hell out of me.

It's not in direct sunlight, there is natural light alright but wouldn't be direct.

Anywhoo, I stuck a couple of photos of the new Angel's up in the photography section if you wanna check em out ;)
