Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Is it too late??

Hi my name is sumsar I've been a member of the forum for two weeks, I've yet to introduce myself in the forum sorry about that.

At the moment though I have a problem with one of my Catfish, I have noticed that in the last two days he lies on his side alot, swims sideways, upside down, somersaults, the lot... then there are other times were he is swimming okay..

I get from this he is dying... but is it too late? I don't have a hospital tank at the moment so I can't really take him out of the tank... If anoyone knows if it's too late or even why he is swimming like that I would really appreciate it..

PS.
I have this Catfish about three weeks now and I have noticed preeviously that he has no whiskers and even when food is on front of him he often doesnt eat it and i push the food literally until it hits off him... any ideas if this is related?

Sorry about that large post and thank you in advance.

hi, welcome to the forum.

what type of a catfish is it?
what other fish do you have in your tank?
how long has your tank been set up?
and have you tested your water?
were the catfish whiskers gone when you bought it?

it could be a case that your catfish was in a poor condition when you bought it,
or could be a problem within your tank,

Hi thank's for the reply,

It's a Cory Catfish,

Total fish - 2 Cory Catfish, 1 Guppy and 1 Dwarf Gourami

The tank has been set up probably since Febuarary
I previously had 1 platy (got rid of him as he was a bully and bullied a Molly so much until he died also bullied my catfish as soon as i god them, non stop chased them thats when i had enough of him.)

I'm not sure if the whiskers were gone when i got him, or after the platy bullied him..

I have not tested my water yet this week ( i'll check it later no kit in this house)
But I do a water change minimum of two times a week but usually 3 times.

I dont mean to break any rules by double posting or anything, but does anybody know if I should take out the sick fish in order to prevent other fish from getting sick??

The problem though would be I have no hospital tank so it would be pretty much finnishing him off, but he hasn't moved alot today he still breathing though lying on his side and moves positions every now and again..

you got any sharp gravel in the tank, that could of nipped off the wiskers?

you gotta get the water tested and if there is anything out of tune you will have to get your own test kit and keep it with the tank 24/7.

silly questions but i have to ask
wat size tank?
do you have a filter?
are you cleaning the filter?
are you dechlorinating the water?
how much water do you change each time?
do you syphon the bottom of the tank?

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

hes done for if thats the case, sorry to say, sounds as if hes gone to far to save,
you could take him out and put him in the freezer, its up to yourself.

No worries man, I understand they need to be asked.

only a 54L but theres only four fish at the moment,
I've a filter that will do upto 100L
I cleaned the filter about 5 weeks ago (in the water that i took out of the tank during a change)
Yeah I use Stress Coat +
around 15% (its a bucket full)
Yeah I syphon the bottom of the tank every change.

I will do a test of the water tomorrow, TBH I've only tested the water once but it was perfect so I assumed if I give it regular cleans of 2-3 times a week it would be okay... but we all know what happens when you assume I guess..

oh and no sharp stones, I've a feeling it was the bully fish I previously had.

Yeah I think so too, after looking abit online it sounds very alike the symptoms of swim bladder disease from what I read... but of course I'm no expert.

I appreciate every reply guys, Much appreciated.

btw a friend of mine just done a water test for nitrite and ammonia, and they both came up 0...

So it's not looking like anything wrong with the water.
