Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just a quick intro, not going to bore anyone with the history from my first goldfish to date.
But I think where I am now is more interesting! It's decision time. I have a 180ltr tank with two large Tiger Oscars which I settled for a few years back when I wanted to set up a S/A cichlid tank but couldn't source the ones I wanted, Now I plan to build a 600ltr tank with Stand & Canopy and sump filtration system.
It was while doing my research for this project that I found this site and wow! what a find. Loads of super information and knowledgeable people it's fantastic. I have a feeling you people will keep me from self destruction in this project. So all comments and advice is greatly welcomed.

Welcome to the forum Redser, joined not so long ago myself and have just completed a 590 litre tank and canopy. They're in the DIY section of the forum. It's too cold in my garage to build the cabinet at the moment - glue and sealers just don't work at low temperatures so I'm spending all of my time searching for lights, filters etc. I would like eventually to install a sump but for now I'm thinking external filter. At first they seem terribly pricey but I found an 'All Pond Solution 2000' external aquarium filter that some of the boys on the forum have used - and it's just about the 85 euros. Also Beta LED lighting for large tanks is worth checking out. I'd love to see how you get on so take loads of photos please.

You're very welcome Redser, those are a couple of nice Oscars there.

I see you've picked up on the fact that they do like to see pics here!

Don't forget to ask away if you have any questions, someone will surely be able to help you.

Thanks Mr B
Had a look at your DIY projects they are fantastic - have asked some Q's on each of them looking forward to your reply.
Also looking forward to how your going to approach the base unit. This forum is fantastic!
As a suggestion would it not be interesting for us enthusiasts to get an idea of pricing and what the different sections end up costing you.
And time frame, how long it takes to do the different parts of the project,
And from the pictures you seem to have a fair supply of tools at your disposal, maybe list out the different tools needed to start the project etc.
Just a suggestion!

Hey Redser, I'm a sucker for monster fish and have quite a few which include red piranha, black piranha, arowana, clown knife, ghost knife, peacock bass, oscar, severums, jack Dempsey, silver dollars, tilapia butti, midas and pangasius.

Lots of big water changes for that bunch :)

That sounds more like a fish shop than a hobbyist!
But that is some collection you have, how many tanks do you keep?
Hope you have your own water supply!
