Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi folks,
One of the reasons I joined your forum is I was impressed by puddlefish's thread or article on your website (that I stumbled upon when surfing the web for Notho info) and i wanted to talk to him. Sadly, I heard he is no longer active with your forum...we'll see about that! Infact I have a lot of questions, such as what is a typical Irish "fish house"? Is it similar to a U.K. fish house? In the states where I live we have "fish rooms" some of which can fill an entire basement. It would be intriguing to set up a small garage into a fish house. Where I live (which is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan...hence, U.P.), such a structure would have to be super insulated, especially incase of such a cold winter we are experiencing this year. Last night it was 23 degrees below zero fahrenheit (+ 32 degrees F = 0 degrees C ...which you already know). Michigan's Upper Peninsula sits between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan and it is only connected to lower Michigan by the Mackinac Bridge. Originally the Upper Peninsula was actually part of the territory (now state) of Wisconsin. But the federal government gave the Upper Peninsula to Michigan as a consolation prize for losing the Toledo War (Ohio won the city of Toledo). It wasn't much of a war and you can google it to find out more if you're interested.
Currently I have 4 fish tanks set up (out of 8 total...a 20 gal long , two 20 highs, two tens, two 2.5 and one one 5.5 gal), but I only have one lonely pair of Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulchur) who refused to spawn for me. The other tanks will hold various type of killifishes. (I have RAC 98 Beira and A. nigripinnis eggs I have to pick up from a fellow in Milwaulke, WI that are already paid for). He can't send them to me via post because it is just too cold outside and they could be frozen just by sitting in a drafty mail van. So right now I won't have much to show. I am also a fish geneticist (actually phylogeneticist) and I'm also a salmon and trout fish culturist (but not here in Michigan). I'm also a member of two motorcycle forums (Honda Hawk GT and Adv Rider).
I'm am glad to see that you have a new section on fishing as well as fish keeping and I have a lot to say about each subject. Here in the U.P. week have Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush), Coho salmon (O. kisutch), rainbow trout (O.mykiss), Broun trout (Salmo trutta) and Salvelinus fotinalis (brook trout) in Lake Superior and connecting streams. The "inland lakes" have cool and warm water species such as walleye (S.vitreum), Yellow perch (Perca flavesens), large and smallmouth bass and Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) to name a few. My favorites are Coho, brook trout (brookies or in Canada "specks"), Rainbow trout, bluegill, perch and walleye in that order...as sportfish and (mainly) table fare.
Later, Jon

welcome to the forum. I'm betting the whole bike thing will get the attention of a few guys on here, naming no names ;)

Welcome aboard, there a quite a few killifish fans here and I'm almost sure puddlefish ventures on here every now and then so hopefully he might see this. There are also a couple of others here who have a wealth of knowledge regarding killifish who regularly help where possible.
Into the biker scene myself but more customs from bobbers-choppers-streetfighters but my bobber is a very long term project haha
Hope you enjoy your stay :)
