Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Theresa here i am new to this site, I started in Jan of this year with a 25 litre tank, Started off with 2 Sordtail Platy,Then in feb I got Ancitrus and 7 Cardinal Tetra,
I live in a hard water area, but am getting the water from my son to change every week, Ten days ago I got a spike in my tank so i lost my Ancitrus and I of the Cardinal tetra, Readings were done in Maxi zoo and they were very high.Since then I have done the water changes and now everything seems ok, I am due to do another change on Thursday and then bring in sample to Maxi Zoo over wkend, I am hoping to get a new Ancistrus, I know i have a lot to learn and am hoping you will all help
me out,
Many Thanks

Small tanks can be tricky to keep, things change very fast in small amounts of water.
You should try to get your own test kit as you may need to test daily especially if things are getting a bit high and maxi can do a confirm test for you also.
Lots of water changes are usually good for most spikes.

My Son got me interested, He has a very big tank and I enjoyed watching all his different fish swimming around, I have to say i really love my little tank, Maybe one day I will get a bigger one, Fingers crossed that the readings will be ok, I will do another water change tomorrow,

Thank you Dec. I am doing regular changes of water, Here is hoping that the readings will be ok over the weekend, So far so good, How much would a test kit cost me, Gosh it really is a science of its own,
The API is usually about €40 in LFS I think and Sera about €50 on line. The API has the main tests ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH. The sera adds a number of others like kh gh etc.

Yeah an the science is half the fun
One of the things I love about this hobby is that it, by necessity, increases your knowledge in certain areas; biology, some chemistry, even a little electronics. One day you know nothing, then after a time you're talking pH, parts per million and the nitrogen cycle.
