Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

ITFS Fish Show for 2010

Hi all

I was just wondering about The Show. I have one absolutely beautiful fish which I think would have a very good chance of winning in its class. I brought it down to the LFS to ask a most knowledgeable person for his opinion on the fish. He totally agreed along with his experienced staff that it was top class. I then told him that I was thinking of showing it at The Show.

He just laughed and told me I would be wasting my time and effort as it's only a 'click' and not to be wasting my time and effort.

Didn't look like a click to me last year when the prizes were being awarded! All types of fishkeepers were being called up on stage... from 10 year olds with goldfish to older guys who had decades of fishkeeping under their belts. It's the fish that gets judged, not the owner. ;)

I would be very interested to know what shop and who said that, perhaps you would PM me.

I am the Show Secretary this year, so I take offence at that type of remark as I am sure previous Secretaries, organisers, volunteers and sponsors would, not to mention the judges.

Bring your fish along, you don't need a tank, but I suggest you bring your own water, though of course water will be available. Entering the fish takes place the evening before the show from about 6pm on.

I didn't understand this for a moment - then the penny dropped (no, I didn't get wet...when I 'fell in'!!!).

That really is a most harsh condemnation of all the effort which is put in to running the Show by so many people.

I think your 'most knowledgeable' LFS person was being rather insincere - to say the least!
Perhaps, with all his knowledge, he should attempt the Fish Judges' Exam and see just exactly how much work goes in to becoming one!

They ARE impartial to the ultimate limit - any fish which wins wins because it is the best fish in the class - irrespective of who has entered it.

I feel Daragh Owens is right - this is a terrible slur on the whole Show!

Enough said.

All fish entered in the shows are 'anonymous',that is the owners name is not displayed, and not known to the judges. So even if it were some sort of 'clique',you would stand an equal chance with all those in the 'clique'.
I would suggest you enter the fish, and ignore the 'knowledgeable' person. You get that sort in all walks of life.

I'm interested in attending, just have no idea where i'm going. I'll be getting a bus from the city centre, anybody know which will bring me too/near the show?

From the front page of this website:woohoo: ...

By Bus

Routes 54A & 65B depart Eden Quay in Dublin City Centre every 15/20 minutes. The journey should take approximately 25 minutes. Get off at the stop immediately after the M50/Firhouse Roundabout. Cross the road, and follow the lane-way up to the National Basketball Arena. The centre is across the road just beside the group of shops and beside the Penny Black Pub

Alternative Route

Route 77A also departs Eden Quay. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. Get off at the Penny Black/National Basketball Arenastop and the Community Centre is just beside the Church

If you get the 77A it will bring you the closest. It will be easy to find from there.

Yep 77 and the 77a will bring you the closest although you could get the 65 ,54a ,50 and the 65b with a small 5 minute walk. 30 minutes min time to get there with no delays but expect 45 to an hour to be safe.

A small point, but one worth checking out,
Do Sunday bus services run to a similar timetable?

Fairly obvious really (probably why I didn't think of looking).

So, a bit less frequent but at least they are still running on Sundays.
Cheers,

Great photos, thanks Darragh. My camera never made it out of the bag of the whole weekend.

So much to say but I am still getting fish organised back to their tanks etc.

Ashamed to say when I left about 10pm Platty252, Goldy and a fantastic helper, Johnny, were still clearing up and returning the hall to normality, but after being there since Saturday morning I was not functioning mentally or physically anymore.

Great to meet new faces and reacquaint will old, there were loads of people there I wanted to talk to and never got around to it, the few hours fly by. Anyway, I have to go now, as soon as these fish are sorted I am off to bed.

A huge big thanks to everyone that helped, shows don't happen "just like that", there is a massive amount that goes on. You might be able to see some of it tomorrow. For the eagle eyed there was a video camera high over the hall that was shooting on timelapse so we should have a Benny Hill style movie from early Saturday to late Sunday - but it is all in the camera for the moment.

Congrats to all the show winners, Best in Show (I think I still have your Certificate Ken), raffle winners etc.

OK,
I'm finally back in the land of the living.
I have to agree with all comments regarding the Show which have preceded this.

A more personally-inclined series of observations will follow after I have attended to the fish.

In the meantime a special mention has to be made for KenS, what a wonderful achievement his fish not only scooping first second and third the the African Cichlid class but also being awarded the accolade of Best Fish in Show - 'Hats Off To Ken' - to plagiarize one of Del Shannon's sixties hits.

Back in a little while.

I was out at the show yesterday afternoon, just wanted to say thanks to all those involved in it, as someone else has said, these type of things dont just happen so fair play to all that worked in setting up so we could enjoy it.

My only suggestion for next year would be maybe some more planted freshwater tanks, there was a good few marine tanks with the "nemo" set up there which were pretty cool to look at but personally speaking I would have loved to have seen some fantastic freshwater set ups too.All in all a great day out, seen some cool fish and thanks again.

I would love to see that too, unfortunately transporting and setting up a tank like that the day before the show is very difficult and the tank would be at it's best for the show. There was one sponsors freshwater planted tank set-up on display.

Platty252 worked on a display tank for the show for a few weeks in advance, however there just was not time to go and get it and set it up, he like a few others were there from very early Saturday morning until very late Sunday night, with only a few minutes at home to catch whatever jumped into the net to enter for the show!

hi all just a short note to say that I really enjoyed the show. Its really hard work all in all but when you see it up and the the fish on display its worth it. It was also great to see people from the forum and the clubs. Thanks to people who travelled like lar and mickey. David is looking great.

Mickey I forgot to point it out to you on the day and I dont know if you saw it. I put up one of your articles on the back wall about the life expectancy of fish. Your byline was on it. I had intended on putting up more articles and pictures but I ran out of time.

I cant believe that we were there from early saturday morning to 11.30 sunday night and I ran out of time.....oh well. I am still brain dead to day and have a whole kitchen full of stuff to sort out and put away so back to it.

Thanks to all that came and helped and of course the sponsors who displayed in the hall. And shame on you that went to the beach :woohoo:

oh I dont know norrie the rainbows were amazing but the lads are pretty tasty too.:P
Johnh I am glad you got home safely. I was concerned about you after being up all night benching fish and then having to drive home after along day at the show. Hope your fish all got home in good shape too
Glad to say that my own fish made it home safe and some are even in good form today and hungry which is a good sign. Although when I am looking into the tanks you can see the nervous scatter now that they know there could be a big journey and a lot of people looking at them.

Thanks for the concern Nessa, no problem getting back - although the last ten to fifteen minutes were a bit of a nightmare. Commonsense tells you to pull over for a short nap, but the little 'demon' up there in what's left of my brain kept suggesting it was only 'just around the corner'. Anyway we got home, but ashamed to admit the fish were only floated for the night, released today.
All were well, like yours, apart from two Kribs which went to meet their maker en route home - to be honest they never looked brilliant when being bagged before departing. A real pity, but the consolation (for me, not the poor deceased fish) is that I still have the rest of the brood, so they'll soon be replaced.
I'm so very sorry you and the others had to stay on until so late - I ought to have stayed on and offered to help but fatigue had well and truly taken over by the time I did depart!

I would like to add my thanks to everyone who helped both set up the Show, run it efficiently, then dismantle the whole shebang after...you all know who you are.
I thought, too, that it was brilliant that the lads from the LFKS mucked in and gave a great deal of help, we would have been it the proverbial without them.

Thanks, too, to Paul - as usual his sterling help in the huge amount of work he does to make these Shows work as well as they do is often forgotten when all the plaudits are handed out - Paul, you're a star!

Last, but by no means least, we must give thanks to the Judges who spend hours 'doing their thing'
- take a bow, lads!

John
