Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Cichlids tank setup

Hi Gerry
Tank is looking well,

Re;the spray bars

leaving the inlet pipe as is without the spray bar

are the spray bars on the inlet or the outlet ...? They should be on the outlet, the filters will still work without them but do you not think the out flow current may be too strong/locally without the spray bar fitted, the spray bars tend to distribute the flow over a wider range also the fact you have no plants in the tank means you don't have to worry about gas exchange,I'd leave them on and just make sure they are below the waterline, why do you want to remove them ...? for looks..? too noisy..? maybe you could place them vertically in the tank at the sides.?

Re:Bogwood..I'd take it out I think it clashes with the colour of the rock and also bit looks a bit too random, like it was just dropped in,my main thinking behind wood in tanks is that it should nearly always travel upwards towards the surface as if these pieces of wood are tree roots ect which are entering the water from above,
also with all the fish colour you are going to have I think you will get a great contrast with just the rock. The labs are nice and bright, can't wait to see it with some more fish in there.:woohoo:

Anyway ....Just my 2 cents....for what its worth....:)

Hi Lar
Just a typo , have the spray bars on the outlet, regarding the wood i agree with your comments especailly the color contrast when i get more fish, i am not totally comfortable with the wood at the moment myself, even the missus thinks it would be better without so i think i will remove them.
i was thinking of removing the spray bars just for a visual improvment of the tank, i have them below the water level for noise reduction but you can see them clearly from where i sit, if it is going to reduce the work rate of the filter or effect the fish in any way they will stay in place as is, but if it make no problems for the tank i might take them out and see if i can turn the remaining pipe work upwards to get water disturbance.

Looks good Gerry!!

Can't spot any fish other than the yellow labs to id..

re: the spray bars - what I did with mine was shorten them & put them on the ends of the tank.

If you remove them you will remove the flow from the tank, you need good flow to keep all of the dirt & crap moving about to be picked up by the filter.

Noise can be a problem but if you keep them just under the surface & angled slightly towards it you will get surface disruption without the noise.

Nerve wracking stuff stacking those rocks.. I had a rock fall yesterday for the first time in ages..

Cheers 2Poc

Must have a tinker with the returns of the filters, will get it right eventually!!!!

Yea stacking the rock is a bit nerve racking, i got a lot of big rocks and placed them at the bottom and then used much smaller rocks to build up.So far so good.

A pic of that fish for id, sorry about the quality hope you can see enough, also a few pics of the tank with wood out and a few more rocks added.

Cheers

looks like a Jewel cichlid
aqualandpetsplus.com/Cichlid,%20Jewel.htm,
not a malawi native its west african, not from the rift lakes and can be a bit aggressive when breeding and will most probably end up battered by mbuna

Fishkeeping the Only way to get wet and wild

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Hi Gerry,
They are Juwel cichlids, they seem to hold their own in my tank, "for now" I haven't had any problems with the rest of my fish. Mine have turned a beautiful red colour and I hope this is because the're happy in their envoirement. I'll post some pics.

Cheers Dalay, knew you told me the name when i collected them but my head is like a sieve sometimes:) :)
The pics look stunning, what a cracking color. As you say they must be totally comfortable in there surroundings to colour up like that, hopefully it won't take my 2 long to settle in fully.
