Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Guys. My largest fire red jumbo discus has been going down hill for months. He is now almost bending over on himself (head arching back towards the tail fin). He's still eating but has become rail thin...I know there is nothing left that I can do for him - tried everything I know - metro, praziquantel etc...This is fish specific as my other 5 discus are all A1. Anyway and sadly I can tell that death is inevitable...

While he is one of my favourite fish I really don't want his illness to spread to the rest of my fish as his system just isn't strong enough to fight off whatever he has....

So, how so I put him out of this is a pain free, humane fashion?

Thanks...... :(

Few drops of clover oil in a bucket/plastic container with water from the tank he's in just enough to cover him

I've had to do this and I'd advise mixing the Clove Oil with the water or it'll just float on top of the water (as oil tends to do).

If you can't get your hands on clove oil just put the fish in a plastic container with tank water and put it in the freezer for a couple of hours...worked for me with farely big fish.
A lot of people I know have no problem just getting the scissors to the fish as it's over in a second and the fish will feel feck all but yet I've no problem with that it's not for everybody, especially me..............showing my girlie side now!!

@Lydia: thanks so much and very sad alright I must admit......

@Ger: Christ no, def not up for getting a scissors to him and I'm with you on that one! I just couldn't do that no matter what...I think out of all these options, the clove oil sounds most 'humane' to me....thanks for your help btw...

ive tried icey water before and i have seen fish struggle and thats nit nice, the fastest way is unfortunatly the most nasty sounding but i think it is best jus get a real sharp knife like a meat clever and chop the head off, thea fish is dead instantly

it works great on very small fish. On anything larger than a platy it won't chill/shock it fast enough to make it a humane death, in my opinion

"The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of your life; your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you. They're freeing your soul."
