Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I got 5L of AquaBasis and that filled approx. 1/2 of my tank. Maybe a little bigger than half, but that's it. I basically put my AquaBasis in the back left corner, and it doesn't reach the front pane or the right pane (if that makes sense?). I was happy with not covering the full tank as I only planned to put plants in one section and also it helped me have a slightly sloping substrate.
I got 25L of Manado and I used about 2/3 to 3/4 of it. Not exactly sure how much I didn't use, and I've given it away now so I can't check, but I'd say there was maybe 6-8L left in the bag.
There's a possibility I may have layered both substrates a little 'thick', but only a little, I didn't go crazy or anything.
The only thing I'll say about the Manado is that its quite 'light'. It does sink (apart from a few grains when you first put it in the tank) but when using a gravel cleaner some will come with the bucket into the water (thought most of it won't). It's easy to put back in again though, as it does sink like I said.
Also, be careful what you're planting. I've had a lot of problems planting Vallis in it. That's 'cos Vallis needs to have the top of its roots exposed, which leaves very little to go into the substrate, and I don't think the Manado is 'heavy' enough to hold the Vallis in place. It took me a good while to get the Vallis in without it floating free again, and I'm still not certain if enough of the roots are exposed. Other plants that don't have this need for their roots to be exposed would be fine I'd imagine, I've some Cryptos that are doing fine in it. And my Corys love digging around in the Manado...
Hope that all makes sense!

About manado I think a 25l will be more than enough for me, you said is a bit light and some goes by the gravel cleaner, the other option is Ada amazon dunno if is heavier than manado.

I would let the fact that Manado is light put you off using it, it's just something to be aware of. And I'm only in this hobby a couple of months, so I don't know about the John Innes or Ada Amazon, sorry...
