Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

One of the symptoms of fin rot is redness at the root of the fins.
I'd treat with esha 2000 which is a broad spectrum treatment that should sort it out whilst not harming too much bacteria in your filter.

Whats wrong with using a broad range anti bacterial treatment like this  ?

Jack - well put; I'll add Marine Salt.

there being not a mark on him otherwise, or any of the tankmates, I think I will leave it at that for now and just continue to monitor.

thanks again for the advice & education - truly grateful

Bacterial disease is usually redness but never seen in symmetric for, this redness is too perfect which worries me a lot that it could be bacterial, its worried so much that the doubt prompted me to contact some of my old contacts in the Florida fish farms, I also remember seeing one in Sparsholt college on an African fish that never died without taking any action, so here it is bingo a 98% probability of the correct diagnose, if still the pH should be over 8pH so a level table spoon of salt at lower temp, is advisable as you drop 1Centergade for every 5Metres of lake water hence 15M is 3C off amazon Temp in 2M of river water.

thanks for your efforts Jack - really appreciated.

now, if it is vitamin deficiency (specifically vit A) I should supplement diet with dark green veggies or such correct ? (as well as adding salt)

I have been feeding only New Life Spectrum Cichlid Formula.

I don't know off the top of my head, can any one help? in the mean time all freshwater fish even the hardy types should get frozen food, even commercial available frozen food once a week to balance the diet if dry food is fed the rest of the week.

Since he is in a bad way, may be the commercial available African frozen food mix fed daily for 2 weeks would be a good idea, followed by once a week to keep status quo.

For example with humans that have white spots on their finger nails that s due to lack of zinc so sea foods or zinc tablets are required.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!
