Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Imho there is too many pieces of wood, tanks looks smaller. I would remove some of the pieces on the right. But obviously you know better than anyone what you are trying to achieve!

That was my idea - just bogwood with many hiding places for kuhlie loaches , banjo catfish ,and all the shy guys ;)
im Thinking about disconnecting one bulb to get that darkish look ,but then will there be enough light for the plants.
And is it not going to lower the PH too much ?? dont know my head is just wrecked after two days inside this .... tank.

I'm no aquascape expert but it looks pretty awesome to me, are you putting in carpet plants?

How old is the bogwood? It may not have much effect if it is older as most of the tannins will have leeched out of it

Cheers man
i kinda like it too but its still not quite what i want -makes any sense ? cant really put any carpet plants in as im planning to dim the light .
Wood is old enough and been in three tanks already , i hope you are right here .
I also have some coral rocks here just in case if PH is too low tomorrow .

I thing you have to much bogwood in the tank.
At the start it is hard without all the plants to visualise the final layout but most of the time the plants do a nicer job at adding a sense of perspective than hardscapes.
If it was my tank i will remove some of it and cover the rest with java moss, some vallisneria at the back and maybe a large anubia, they will do fine with a low light.
You should have a look at the tropica website for idea on plants and layout.
Have fun!

Anthony

If your substrate is soft the kuhlie loaches will burrow in it. I like your tank now with all the hiding places, better for the fish.

I've done my web research about a week ago ,looking to use my spare 3 pieces of wood and excess of plants , then had time to think about what i want .. As i already have a planted 200 liter , went for something dark this time and focused on bogwood with anubias and java fern on . might add some java moss aswell ,
just re-decorated the whole damn thing again and im not happy at all , going for a smoke

I know the feeling...still happens to me with the community I sit and look at it and doesn't fully convince me, but I will have my opportunity to rip it out and start again when I move to another house.

My advice is don't put water until you like the layout, and change things many times until you sit there and like what you see and next day the same... If you're able to sit 2 or 3 days REALLY liking what you are looking at then you have find it.

In the meantime you can still look for inspiration, knowing more or less what you want. How knows maybe you find something you've miss

hope you're chilled by now, nothing more relaxing than sending the gf out for carry pack while you check the ph on the first 6  . Im a big fan of natural looking river scapes and your tank is perfect.
