Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Summoning discus keepers

Hi people

I have a semi planted (in process of getting more plants) 180l tank which is cycling right now but I'm already doing plans of which fish I'm putting.
I'm planning a young pair of discus, 20 neon cardinals and 20 lampeye, some amano shrimps and some corys.

I know most of you have only discus setups but for a community one what do you think about the tank mates?
Will they be able of breeding in future?

I have plenty of time yet but any advise is more than welcome!

Im sure the poor shrimp will make a tasty treat for the discus. Dont add the shrimp. Not sure how the discus will be once they mature. The killifish may also be harassed by the discus, maybe some of the discus keepers can better advise you.

Hi Lydia,

As always I'll preface any advice I give with the warning that I'm only new to all this! :)

I'm not too sure about whether the other fish will get along with Discus (or vice versa) but I would be a little concerned about the amount of fish you're planning. Your tank is about the same size as mine (mine's a Rio 180 which only actually has about 145L of water in it, including the external filter), and you're looking at about 50 fish/shrimp or so. I know most of them are gonna be small, but I have similar enough sized fish and I'm looking at around 25 max.

Like I said, just a thought, and other people here can help more, I'm probably just being over cautious!

I would assume that the discus you are getting are going to be smallish specimens as opposed to planning full-sized discus being put in with micro-sized cardinals ;)

Personally, I would give the lampeyes a miss full-stop.......they would also get "lost" against such brilliant coloured other fish.

Corydoras catfish and discus needs some careful consideration. Not all Corys can tolerate very well the high temperature demanded by Discus.
Which species of Cory were you having your eye on?
I would recommend Corydoras sterbai as the ideal commonly available Cory to mix with discus.

A few discus and 20 Cardinals in a 180 litres is not that bad.
The key thing is water changes and food quality......if you don't do decent and properly scheduled water changes then no size of tank is good enough for discus.
A common mistake made by many keepers is the belief that a large tank fixes all.....it doesn't.

Jason you were right it was too much, following your advise with the calculator of www.aqadvisor.com seems with 10 neons and 2 discus my stocking level is about 59%.

Ian yes I'm planning a small size couple. About the lampeye you're right, when I saw this fish was in a nano tank with some sakura and cherry shrimps.

About water changes I'm planning doing one weekly, from what I read seems one of the keys is being constant with water changes and not change the frequency of them.

What algae eaters are compatible with Discus and the temp?

Hi Lydia,

Don't forget, that website is just a guide, but I do think it's better to err on the side of caution.

I do a 33% water change once a week, and it seems to work for me, but I'll keep an eye on it when I've more fish in the tank (I currently have 13 fish and 2 snails, but I hope to add more soon).

I use a couple of Nerite Snails for my Algae, they're small, look interesting, and don't reproduce in Fresh Water. I plan to get some Otos to help with Algae in a while too (they're smaller than Plecos but they prefer a more 'mature' tank so I'm going to get them last)

Hi,
Not knowing your budget or what you have in mind in terms of Discus I can donate a couple fish to you. The reason is they aren't perfect and i have loads of other fish so i could use the space. One blue one and one orange one. Will send you a PM with my number. You can call me and I can describe them to you and send you some pics.
