Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

are Coolie loaches nocturnal or are they just skittish..I mean if I had a group of say 9 with no other threatening fish in the tank would they venture out more often.I ask this as I don't wanna purchase fish that I can never see

I had really bad experience with kuhlis, like two months ago I bought 3 of them from a sponsor I have close. This fishes brought something bad with them, some fungus. One week later I had just left half of my livestock, despite I treated the water with meds and did a huge water change.

I only had microrasboras and lampeyes and no fish was a threat for them. But they remained mostly hide and when they were active at night they used to swim really fast and I think my fishes were stressed, also I found some fishes with flesh gone, alive (for short time) but pretty damaged and a couple of shrimps dead with no tail, this always happened after lights went off because I found them at the next morning, so a week later I brought them back to where I bought them. Poor the one that bought them after me.

I read about them before buying and seemed a nice fish, no 'aggressive', but mine were, they're suppose to do better in groups of 6 or more because they feel more safe. Couldn't imagine how many livestock I had left if I'd bought more than 3.

In my opinion they're more visible when they're in greater numbers with less cover. They just LOVE having somewhere to hide. I had a large piece of Mopani years ago, densely covered with Java fern and from the moment I put half a dozen in, I only saw them at feeding time when they'd slither out for some nosh and then slither back in! Fascinating fish but not the most outgoing ;)

Replied by Alex (Alex) on topic Will Coolies just hide?
Coolies are one of my favourites and in the right conditions they can be very active....

Lots of hiding places is a must.... Indian almond leaves scattered around the tank work best in my opinion, they also suit black water tanks which is a bonus.

Next is numbers..... I think a minimum of 12 is best if you want them to feel comfortable in the tank enough to venture out. 20+ and you will wont miss em ;) ! Years ago i kept 5 and never saw them bar feeding.... upped the number to 14 and i couldn't miss em. It also takes some time for them to get used to the tank... they might hide for a few weeks.

Id like to keep em again but cant seem to find them for a decent price though... 4-5 euro each whenever i see them. that being said i haven't looked past 2 shops  . How much do they usually go for.....?

I used to keep mine with shrimp and all sorts and never had a problem....

Here is an example of a perfect setup for them.... this person uses Oak leaves

I have about 8 in a 4ft tank, they never bother any body. Once they mature they will show themselves at feeding. They will hide under the substrate and eat up any left over food. Rope/reed fish are much better fun, also much bigger.
