Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi there,

Wasn't certain where to ask this, but the Beginners Haven seemed like the best fit...

I was recently in a Fish Shop and I noticed that two of the tanks had dead fish in them (actually one of the 'dead' fish was still just about breathing but upside down and not swimming etc.) and the dead (or dying) fish were being eaten by the other fish. Part of me thought that I should point it out to the staff, but I wasn't sure as I'm only new to all this and maybe that's a big no-no?

What little I've learned and read over the last few months suggests that you shouldn't buy fish from a tank with a dead fish in it, is that correct? Or is the occasional dead fish just par for the course in a fish shop? Should I have mentioned it to the staff?

Second question about the rights and wrongs when dealing with a fish shop. I'm looking to get some fish that a fish shop currently has in Quarantine. They are due out of Quarantine soon and will be 'moved' to the shop floor. If I turn up to buy them on the day they're being moved from Quarantine, is it ok to get them from the Quarantine Tank? Would that be better than getting them from one of the shop tanks (as they've been in a more controlled environment) or is it better to leave the fish in the shop tank for a few days before I get them?

Would love to hear people's thoughts on this. Thanks...

J.

Customers should buy what they are told too..........
Customers should not notice dead fish..........
Customers should not notice dirty tanks..........
Customers should be happy that they are spoken too..........
Customers should pay over the odds for fish..........
Customers should pay and get the hell out..........

Ask in the shop for them to hold the fish for you, offer a deposit,
collect them the day they were to be moved
dont buy from tanks with a few dead fish,
and do point out the dead fish in the tanks

Replied by Lauris (Lauris) on topic Fish Shop Etiquette
I always do point out dead fishes if I'm in my favorite LFS. It is nothing bad one or other fish dies. You cannot get 100% control of natural processes. I'm working with customers over 7 years in different roles covering different products and I know how important small things might be. And if I'm in my local (means trusted also) LFS ... why not.. as I'm not only after fish and advice given from right assistant is invaluable. So I can help as little as with pointing out dead fish and spending my money :) :)

I am planted!

Thanks for your replies!

The next time I notice a dead fish I will politely point it out. And I will hopefully arrange to get the fish I want from Quarantine...

Thanks...
