Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Anthony,
you are probably right. Costs are too high. I used to work in retail when I was still in school. A couple of days at most. 6 weeks is just not viable for the dealer.

I am not saying that retailers should quarantine there stock for 6 weeks.
I am advising the purchaser should be in a position to be able to do it .

For the reailer I would say 4 to 5 days from reciept of stock, with careful observations of stock before release to the public would go a long way. I would have more respect and faith in him if he said to me That the fish I was interested in had only arrived a few days ago and would rather I returned a couple of days later. I would willingly pay a deposit to secure a purchase ( refundable if the fish didn't make it ) and would also spend more money with him .in the future knowing they were reliable.
We would all bebefit in the long run. reatiler & customer.
As I said previuosly that one shop I visited in MY opinion should not be trading. and a couple more could do with cleaning up there act.
I for one would willingly post the shops I find to be in my oppinion worth a visit

as far as i can gather ...and correct me if i'm wrong please...

-Aquatic Village do QT their stock but im not sure for how long (drew please tell us)

-Tropical world do not but say that its QTd in their suppliers in UK before they arrive in Parnell st.

-FishFx def QT their columbian orders as i was out there a few days after it arrived and the new stok was not for sale...again im unsure how long they QT for.

These are the only shops i visit so i cant comment on the others. Wackers more so (its only down the road from me).

its really up to the purchaser to examine the fish and the tank they are in,
make sure none of the others in the same tank are sick....ask when they arrived, if it was the day before they may be suffering from ph shock which u cant see, so better to wait a week to let them recover or croak.

And as for QT ing at home...if u can u should. if you cant , have some medication in your cabinet just in case. i once got a whitespot outbreak after adding new plants....but treated quickly and youll have no deaths.

Yes I have heard nothing but good about Aquatic Village and will be visting them soon.

Fish Antics is the best I have seen and used religiously, the stock IS quarantined, Simon has kept Discus, Tropicals and is one of the best sources of Marines & information around & you will find that most of his staff have been to college in the U.K for aquatic trainig.or similar.

As for Parnell St, I have heard there plants are good but expensive. not a bad thing for good plant's.

With some retailers you are probably better off with fish that haven't spend too much time in their tanks. Sad to say...

Hi folks
Quarantine is probably the wrong word, as to do it properly would take min. of 6 weeks, depending on sp. and as mentioned before would be too costly. However, we do condition livestock until we deem fit for sale, this is usually a week or so, depending on the species of fish (stingray eg. are bad at travelling so take weeks to condition) and if they are wild, farmed or european tank bred, making sure theyre feeding etc....We have 75 conditioning tanks ranging from 2ft to 4ft out of site, all individual filters etc. So anything from a neon to a 2ft catfish can be housed!!!

Thank's for the info very imfomative.
And agree the quarantine is down to us. and as for the holding tanks very comendable. what we need is this to be continued by the many & not just a few,
By the way what are you called & do you have a web site address?

yeah just on a note to clarify, we qt for two weeks off site before sale. Our supplier does it for us. All our tanks are on an individual filtration system so in the event that something does manifest (and lets face it that can happen no matter how long you qt for on or off site) we can easily treat and nothing is sold from the tank until we get the all clear. The only problem we have had in the last year is the occasional white spot issue (who hasn't, i've heard stories about the best of us getting it believe me) and is easily treatable. In the main i think it's best to set up your own qt tank at home with the basics running, before you introduce anything, from any shop, it's the best way of avoiding trouble with other fish, and treating sick ones.

dont make me come over there.
