Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Really nice looking setup......
What are you using? Any co2 or just using decent lights?
I'm trying looking for a decent filter to use for my own little setup!
Have a nice little piece of wood and tank waiting to be used!!!
I'll pickup the substrate next week!

Hi,i have 3 of them Aquael Shrimp sets and I think they look great but I did find when the lights were on for a long time every day that algae built up very quickly on the plants, wood, glass etc. so keep an eye on that

The heater I also had to change in the one that I keep Shrimp in as it never went below 28 degrees.

Everyone would have there own opinion on this but I've being keeping them at 24-25 degrees successfully for a good while now........The reason I mentioned the heater on the Aquael tank is that it never seemed to go below 28 degrees (some would say fine for shrimp) but I have often looked at the thermometer when the house was warm and it could read 32 degrees.

The aquael was my first tank as well, get read of the heater in favour of one you can adjust the temp.
If your room is cold get a 50w and if not a 25w will do.aquael and hydor do small ones for 20 or 30 euros.
You gonna have algae pretty quickly by keeping the light on 12hrs especially when you gonna have lifestock in.
You should aim for 7-8 hours.
I keep my rcs at 24c like ger.
If you can put some moss in the tank and small floating plants, they will make your shrimps happy.

Don't don't don't remove the Wood, I promise it will come back, I have been there, add one or two young bristlenoses, they will strip it bare and have no impact on Shrimp etc.

Reduce the light to 6-7 hours and do water changes.
Algae feed on nutrients and light.
It will sort out by itself no panic.
Everyone had to deal with algae at one stage.

It is a Mould or Fungus an not Algae, you can boil and scrape, scrub and scrape, it will return with the same vigour as the main part of the organism lives within the Wood and comes to the surface to reproduce, Bristlenoses and Ottos adore it and will make light work of it.
